I guess I'm in the minority on this thread, but I would give the same as I would if I attend, especially for family and good friends. We've missed very few weddings, but in those instances we gave our usual amount based on the relationship. For us, the gift is more about a well wish for the start of the couple's new life together and not about what we get in return (ie enjoying their wedding and reception). Just trying to shed light on a different perspective.
FWIW - those that declined our wedding invitation mostly sent gifts/checks, but if they hadn't i don't think i would have judged them for it even though i do it differently.

This! The gift is my present to the couple in honor of their marriage, not reimbursement for the cost of having me at their wedding. I will be missing my cousins wedding for the same reason as you. They are getting married on New Years Day in MN and my kids aren't invited. I will give the same amount as if I was there
