if you moved from LI...

where did you move to? Do you regret your decision, or were you happy with your decision to leave?

I am really starting to think about wanting to move out of LI, but still not too far away from here.

- Excellent Schools. Don't want to have to send kids to Catholic School
- Has that LI small town feel. I don't want to have to take a highway everywhere I go.
- Being near a beach would be very nice too, but not as important as the small town feel would be. Would like to be within an hour or so to a beach, though :)
- Place where I can get a new teaching job fairly quickly, and my husband can get a new engineering job.
- AND most importantly, lower cost of living/taxes

It's a long list, I know. But I want to start narrowing down some areas because I would like to start SERIOUSLY looking to move in the next 2-3 years. I know alot of people from LI relocate to NC, but I heard the schools aren't good. Not sure if this is true or not.

Was looking into CT, MA, PA, MD, and NC

Any suggestions?

Re: if you moved from LI...

ct, md, and nj all cost just as much if not more than li. The beach towns in Ma are a lot of summer homes in many areas.

I think your best bet would be Nc or Pa for lower costs, but statistically. They say the schools are better in ny, nj, am, md, and ct.

There are many areas of southern CT that are way more affordable than here. My sister is in Norwalk, and her house was only 50k more than ours. She has a 5 bedroom BEAUTIFUL home and taxes are only 5.5k/year. We pay 12k and have a 2 bedroom home, lol

I grew up in Commack and moved to Charlotte, NC in June of 2004. We now live in Concord, which is just north of charlotte but in a different county with better school districts (not as good as LI but better than Charlotte) - we are very happy with our decision to move and although I still feel like a Ny'er at heart, I don't think I would ever move back

We recently moved her from the Triangle area in NC (Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh). I would say it has most of what you're looking for - beaches 2 hours away, RTP (Research Triangle Park) is a big tech location, and it's cheaper. What you would really have to look for is good schools. We were in Durham and the schools were ok, but nothing compared to the scores in NY.

I actually have some family in Raleigh (two aunts and my grandparents). Would you say the schools and towns are safe overall, though? More concerned about that. One family member hated the schools and sent her kids to catholic school.

from the very little research i've done, it seems like Chapel Hill is a very nice town area.

If you truly want a lower cost of living, you're going to have to leave the tri-state area. DH and I looked at Westchester, southern CT, and LI when we were house hunting and chose LI because it was the most affordable.

Once you get out of commuting range, prices drop significantly- so anything above Westchester, northern CT, etc. Also keep in mind that lower taxes can sometimes mean subpar schools. I'd love to move back to Queens- taxes are low, but I'd be paying for private school so really it ends up being all the same. Just something to consider.

Yeah- I think the Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Cary area of NC is the best bet for us, given we can get jobs. I've grown up on LI and so has my husband, so it's a scary thought to be an 8 hour drive away from here. We do love it there, though. I love southern CT, but I know the best districts are in Greenwich, Darien, Westport, and those areas, which are at least 600k for a decent home.

if you moved from LI...

My cousin lives in Morrisville & a friend lives in Holly Springs. Both love the schools (elementary age). No complaints. Neighborhoods are very safe. Kids go year round but they love it.

If I didn't love FL so much, that area of NC would be my next move.

Chapel Hill definitely has better schools, and it's a little pricier than the other areas. I don't know much about Raleigh/Cary schools since we lived in Durham.

There are some schools there that are year round, but I actually like the concept. They go the same number of days, but they don't have 2.5 months off during the summer - which means kids don't have knowledge retention issues going into the next grade. Plus the nice thing about it is that school breaks are during times when other kids are in school so you can go on vacations (Disney, etc) when the crowds aren't as big.

I will say, though, that going from Durham/Chapel Hill to LI was a bit of a culture shock for us b/c it's more liberal down there (in those areas specifically - not the entire state of NC).

Re: if you moved from LI...

Virginia has excellent public schools (Fairfax, Loudon and Arlington) with lots of engineering jobs around Dulles.

Lots of family friendly neighborhoods with good school districts. Much more affordable than NY.

NC pays teachers terribly. That why teachers complain. They say cost of living isn't much cheaper than a big city either. Plus their govenor hates teachers (same as NY unfortunately) I believe there's no tenure either.

Check out the salary scale, I believe it's the same statewide.

We moved from LI. I was born and raised there and never expected to leave, but DH hated LI. Mostly had a problem with the traffic and limited access off the island.
We moved to MA. We live in a coastal town and our school district is comparable to some very reputable districts on Long Island. House prices are comparable but property taxes are a lot lower.
The biggest differences IMO is that the people here are generally much more laid back. Things are a bit slower and people aren't as angry. The weather is comparable and jobs are good. DH and I got great jobs with decent pay raises when we moved here. The economy here is great.
I anticipated hating MA. I was a bit bitter when my husband said he wanted to leave, but I actually love it. I see my daughter having an amazing life here.

If you love CT try the shoreline towns of Branford, Guilford, & Madison. It is about a 2 hr commute into Manhattan so it is definitely cheaper living. But the schools are top notch and the towns are beautiful! If we ever have the opportunity to leave LI that is where we are headed.
