are you planning to rent for the next 3-5 years? buy in the city? buy on LI? in NJ? in Westchester? move OOS?

We live in the city and have for years now. We're actually house hunting now since DS is about to turn one and our 1 bdrm is getting tight. We're looking in Jersey, Bergen to be specific. Westchester would be most ideal but we can't afford it.

We live in Queens and are planning on buying in the near future. LI is out of the question, my husband REFUSES to move to LI, so we juggled between upstate and staying in Queens. My mom is currently buying a home in PA so we'll see how we like it up there and then will make the final decision. But if were to buy today, it would be in Queens. We live near two excellent public schools and we're in the center of all the shopping, parks, buses, trains are not that far, and most importantly we're in a quiet and very family oriented neighborhood.

We're renting and have no intentions of leaving Brooklyn, so we will continue to rent for a while. We don't mind it. It's less stressful and cheaper than owning a home--something we couldn't deal with right now.

We live in Manhattan and hope to buy when our lease is up next May.
I would LOVE to buy where we live now (Hudson Heights) but I don't want a coop and condos and few and far between.
So we are thinking of Queens or Riverdale / north of the city.
I have been a city girl all my life, so I just don't see myself in LI or NJ.

thanks for your replies! this is only our first year living in the city and i'm still adjusting to how much we pay in rent 
my job is in midtown and DH's job is in white plains. I'm just exploring our options...
