If you have a dog...

and walk her/him, do you always use a leash?

Would you 'trust' him/her never to run out of your reach?

Re: If you have a dog...

Since we have only had Lacie a week, we are not 100% sure what she would do. I think that she would run at all the other dogs and people to play but in the end come back to us.

Re: If you have a dog...

Bruno would run right into the street faster than I could blink, so a leash at all times is a must for me.

Re: If you have a dog...

I am sorry... but you should ALWAYS leash your dog.

It drives me batty to see people walking their dogs with no leash. There are leash laws out there for a reason.

There is no way I could walk my dogs without leashes. I tried once and had a heart attack running my arse off after them.

Re: If you have a dog...

We always use a leash. We had our dogs trained and they can walk without leashes, but we don't do it. It's not right to do it. Our neighbors do it and everyone complains, so I wouldn't want to be one of the neighbors people complain about.

Molly's only been walking outside once and she was on a leash. I would be to nervous that she would run away.

Re: If you have a dog...

Leash for a walk around the block, to the vet, etc..

No leash at the dog park (Coindre Hall.) Nor if we're just in the front yard. They stay near by and don't leave the property.

No leash when we're up in CT at our friends' home. Unless we're walking to a neighbor's home, then we use a leash when out on the street, otherwise they're off the leash. We take them hiking, swimming, hunting, etc.. There's no vehicle traffic and they listen to our commands, so it's not really a big deal.

Re: If you have a dog...

We'll take him off leash only when we're in a wide open area when no one else is around. There's a big field by our house and we'll take him there occasionally to run around. Otherwise, he's always on the leash.

Re: If you have a dog...

always a leash on Long Island.

When I bring him upstate, my bf's uncle has 300 acres and his friend across the street owns a 1000 acres so no leash there. He runs with the other dogs up there.

The same for us....but honestly, Casey stops on a dime when you say her name- I would trust her anywhere but I still leash her near big streets. Tally, our new dog, is obedient but not like Casey so I only take her off her leash at a park.

Always a leash

Me too. Dixie got hit by a car before we adopted her, and I would never let that happen to her again.

Re: If you have a dog...

i know that it is completely wrong and irresponsible but i never walk my dog on the leash. i have tried MANY times but he is too big and i am unable to control him. i actually don't really walk him, i just let him roam about in the front. he has NEVER run away. i did buy the gentle leader recently and plan to diligently try and train him to walk.

Re: If you have a dog...

I don't have a dog, but I know when I see people walking without their dog on a leash I tend to stand back or whatever because I have 2 kids with me and I don't trust dogs. They should ALWAYS be on a leash.

Re: If you have a dog...

I do trust her off the leash, she comes when I call her. I only take her off the leash if we are in an enclosed park where I don't have to worry about cars, etc. We take her to "dog friendly" parks where we can walk on trails in the woods and she can run around, she hardly ever gets out of sight and if she goes too far ahead, she'll stop and wait for us.
I have to do this with her like once a week just to get rid of her excess energy. She is a weimeraner and they are extremely high energy dogs.

Re: If you have a dog...

definatly on a leash.

i get VERY mad when i see ppl around here with their dog off leash.

not only could THEY run away or something, but another dog can attack it.

you must realize every third person walking on my block has a dog.

there ias this one dog whov is never on the leash. i must admit she is amazing, she waits outsides restaurants and such....... butn i still dont like it.

ive walked each one alone a few times off leash from the deli at the end of my block baqck home about 8-10 doors down but just becuase i was lazy. and i actuallt carry the4m halfway then drop them on th3e ground and they meet me home.

my dogs COULD wqalk off leash v(not lukin) if i wanted to------but why in the world would i do that?

the only times they re off leash is:
-at the run
-in a bar

Re: If you have a dog...

Well I believe it is the law.

I always walk Ebs on a leash, unless we are in the park. Then I let him off and he stays pretty close to me, like Gerty's dog - no traffc in the park of course. I take him every day. I will put the leash on him there is there are a lot of people in the park or I see another dog because I don't trust other dogs.

He also likes to sit on out front lawn loose. He has never once gone off the property and he is 10 years old. I didn't train him, he just likes to sit or play on our lawn and has no interest in cars, squirrels, whatever.
