Do you trust that the salad bar is clean?


(this is to settle a debate )

Honestly.... I think it depends on the place. For Ruby Tuesdays in particular though, I have a bad feeling its germ infested but since I like eating there I have refrained from looking into it!! (its like not wanting to know how many calories are really in your favorite dessert!)

I've always read that salad bars are to be avoided because of the possibility of contamination from coughing or touching. I never use them.

I am not a germophobe.

I use salad bars, I love them actually

It never really entered my mind but now thinking about it kind of grosses me out

But my memory is bad and I will forget and eat at a salad bar again, for sure!

I don't trust any salad bars or buffets, to be honest..even though I enjoy them - I end up not being able to relax and dine.

At a recent chinese buffet, I saw people with wool coats on reaching their arms to get to the broccoli and chicken and I just could FEEL the fibers/fuzzies of their coat falling off in the sauce...

..and then I wondered if they had a pet and maybe some of the animal hair would end up in the mixture....

....or a stray hair from their head....

I know they have sneeze guards, and that's cool, but it's the REACHING that gets me just as badly as people breathing on food.

I have issues. But hey, I admit to 'em.

The part that really disturbs me the most is when they have a handle bar for the food and people place the handle bar directly ON TOP of the food. So ... imagine the person wiped their nose... or butt.. and didn't wash their hands. Those germs are now harvested on the cucumbers.

I never even thought of that........


I know that germs are everywhere, but I'm a bit of a freak. I won't even touch the counter in a bathroom, or the door, or the flushing handle....I use a paper towel to avoid touching things. If I'm in a bathroom stall and there is no hook for my pocket book, I almost start to cry.

I think about this at all the hot bar things they have in the city at all the lunch places...they're generally in the middle of the place, where everyone is walking by, sneezing, coughing, etc.

I've eaten at a regular salad bar at RT before (like 10 years ago) but I've never eaten at a hot buffet. And I don't foresee myself using either in the future!

I've never gotten sick from Ruby Tuesday. Love their rigatoni pasta salad with peas, and the apple salad!!!! Sometimes I cringe over customers, with possibly unclean hands, touching the stacked salad plates. Mary

I would say that among salad bars, the Ruby Tuesdays I go to (Westbury) is very well kept. I see attendants constantly cleaning it up and replenishing the food.

But again, I feel it's clean RELATIVE to other salad bars I've seen. Overall I feel salad bars and buffets in general are sort of unsanitary, but I do eat at them occasionally.

One thing I do-- when I return to my seat, I always use Purell on my hands after touching all those shared spoons and tongs at the salad bar. Touching items that other (possibly sick) people have touched is the biggest way to spread germs.... the utensils you use to serve yourself at the salad bar probably pose more of a germ risk than the food itself. Think about it-- a person ahead of you coughs into their hand, then grabs the spoon. Where is the biggest concentration of germs? Not necessarily on the food itself, but on the spoon.

Last time I went, they changed the menu again and the food was

I used to get the salad bar, but, I feel that went down hill.

I don't think a lack of cleanliness at any buffet is unique to a Ruby Tuesdays.

That being said, I like the salad bar at Ruby Tuesdays.

I also LOVE this mango flavored alcohol drink they have,I can't remember what it's called but it's got chunks of mango in which I love.

I used to work at a place that had a salad bar and on busy days would totally eat from it. the food was constantly being replaced and the salad bar wiped down. On slow days though.... same food sits out allll day. Yes, it was chilled, but nothing was covered.

i think that ruby tuesday's has one of the cleanest salad bars around... been there a few times and found it to be clean fresh and the food nice and cold !

i love salad bars! do people cough ans sneeze in it? maybe, in fact, probably. people are disgusting. if i saw it, i wouldn't eat it. otherwise, ill go to town.
