If you are thinking about breastfeeding...

If you are thinking about breastfeeding...

I just wanted to share my experience with those ladies who have not decided what they are doing about breastfeeding...

I figured I would "give it a shot" when the baby was born and see how it worked. Well... low and behold I was almost a month early and that was the month I was going to read up and figure out how it all worked.

When Ben was born he was transferred to the NICU and remained there for 4 days - nothing serious - low blood/sugar level and a bit of jaundice. I bf'ed him exclusively for the first 2 days and then I got the distinct feeling that he wasn't getting enough from me as my milk had not come in yet. I felt he needed to be supplemented with formula to help his system fight the jaundice. I continued to nurse but he definitely got more formula.

Long story short - my milk supply never really came in. I still pump everyday 4 - 6 times a day and get a total of 1 oz - yes - only 1 oz. I didn't fully understand how breastfeeding worked nor did I appreciate the HUGE commitment it takes to build and maintain a milk supply.

Maybe other ladies had it easier - but I just wanted to share my experience. You really need to know what you are getting into so you are prepared to make decisions from the onset.

I approached the bf'ing thing very cavalierly - if it worked it worked - yet after DS was born I felt very strongly about bf'ing him. And unfortunately my lack of information led to some bad decisions and has interfered with supplying him with enough milk to not have to supplement.

Good Luck Ladies!

Thank you for posting this. Would you mind sharing what you wish you knew before hand, had you had the extra month to start researching, if there is anything specific?

I just wanted to add for ladies that do want to bf you need to get support form Le leche league, friend who have bf and laction consultants!!! It is great to share your appreciation for the time and commitment it takes to bf!!
If you have low milk the absolute worst thing you can do for your supply is give formula. If you want your body to make you milk you need to eat drink and BF constantly, even if its every hour.

I do understand that it doesnt work out for everyone, but just wanted to let new and expecting moms know about how supply and demand works.

Great post!

So many people I know that go into it with the "if it works it works,; if not oh well" seemed to not succeed.

I agree...you need to be educated on it. Read and have a good support system and it can work!

Unfortunately there are instances where you have no choice but to give formula.

You must have an open mind to BF and be open to the possibility that you can do EVERYTHING right and EVERYTHING that is recommended to do to successfully breastfeed, but sometimes even that is not enough and it doesn't work out.
