If you are adopting...
I've been looking into adopting a dog and have been doing my research and checking out petfinder.
What does it mean when they ask for a vet reference? DH and I have never had a dog together, but I did have dogs growing up and my parents currently have a dog. What exactly are they looking for with a vet reference? Do we need to have a vet lined up before we adopt?

Generally, it means if you have had a pet before you would give the vet you used as a reference.
In your case, you could use the vet your parents use and explain to the agency the situation.

They prob want to see that you have researched vets and have one lined up. Where do you live? I can recommend my vet. I think they are great

I don't think it's a vet lined up--- they ask this to make sure you didn't put your last dog to sleep over a cold or something. They want to make sure that the dog will be going to a caring and responsible family. I would call your parents old vet and ask them if you can use them for a reference. Also, ask them who they recommend if they know anyone in the area that you live in now. HTH! Good luck!

I would explain that this is your first dog, and that you have had dogs growing up but your parents were the ones responsible for the vet. Tell them who your paretns use and that you will use them or most shelters have a vet they use and will reccomend. Anytime we have adopted a dog they have never called the vet. But some shelters might call after the adoption process to make sure you have taken your new dog there.

We use Terry Animal Hospital in RVC, they are great. We started at Central Vet in Valley Stream but we switched because although they are good, we felt they were more concerned with $$ and upcharging us for everything than with our dog's health.

Hilton Animal Hospital in Lynbrook is great. We go there. Not sure where that is in relation to Valley Stream.
