If you and DH can't agree...
... on a particular item for you home (a decorative piece like a lamp, or piece of furnitute, or paint, or a picture) how do you handle it?
We're currently disagreeing about table lamps.

Just buy it yourself and once he sees it, he will most likely love them and if he does not, you can always return it

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
Usually one of us just gives in. I mean for lamps if he hated them and had to look at them everyday I wouldn't get them, if they were expensive. However if they are in the spare bedroom.. then I would buy em!

That's exactly what I do. I tell him, look, let's get them and if you really don't like them - we'll return them.
I can't believe he doesn't like the lamps you want to get. They're not even frou-frou.

He says they're too modern...
He's got no clue. I think I will get them and if it's still an issue... they'll stay anyway!

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
At first I try to find something else that we both like, but in the end I will tell him how much I really like it and he usually says ok then. But if he really hates it, I will not get it. I try to be fair about things like this, we both have to live there. But I'm still the better designer.

Same here-he doesn't care unless I ask for his opinion. I've learned not to make that mistake very often.

Same here I leave the construction aspect up to him but for decorating he knows to step back

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
So funny, DH 100% let's me decorate everything. I always ask for his opinion and he just says "Whatever you want" so I just do it and if he has something to say, I then give him the "Well next time maybe you should help me decide"

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
Most of the reason our house is not totally decorated is that we can't agree. We like some things equally but he likes much more ornate pieces and I like simpler ones. He's much more traditional.
I'm no help, but it is wha it is.

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
Sometimes this happens, if we disagree, we go back to the drawing board and try to find something else.
Sometimes one of us compromises as well. Either one of us can see the others point of view and come around to liking the item I try never to start an argument over it, because its not worth it to me to fight over home decor lol

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
Our tastes are completely opposite, so this is a common problem for us. Usually we try to compromise and find something we both like. But if we can't, one of us will usually give in- as long as we dont absolutely hate the item that the other one wants.

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
I was adament about our curtains, so I bought them and put them up so he could see- if he hadnt liked them I would have taken them back- now he loves them- he needed to try it out
usually we will just keep looking if we cant agree until we find something we both like

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
I picked out a lamp DH disliked... it was vetoed.
He picked out dining chairs I didn't care for... I vetoed.
If an item doesn't get 2 thumbs up, we go back to the drawing board....
Usually, one of us will select an item that the other will either like, or at least not mind... then we buy it.
the dining chairs were difficult... becuase the most comfortable ones (his choice) didn't match our table as well as the prettier ones (my choice). Mind you, both were reasonably pretty and comfy...

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
We move on untill we find something we agree on, unless one person has a really strong opinion one way or the other & the other of us , is so-so about it, then the stronger opinion wins out.
We have very little decoration in our home, so we don't really have this problem.

Usually, I whine until I win.
Really though, DH is an interior designer so he cares about decorating decisions. Most things we work out and compromise on.

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
I am really lucky in that DH does not really care about particular styles or design, in general. All he cares about is how much it costs him. (This is saved for another thread b/c I won't digress!) Typically, we agree on how much we're going to spend on something and he just leaves it to me to pick out whatever that "something" is. As long as its around the amount we agreed to spend, he could care less what it looks like, as long as it works.

This is us, too. On big items (rugs, furniture, wall colors) we have to agree. On little things, we'll be more likely to bend if one really likes it and the other is iffy.

Re: If you and DH can't agree...
Our tastes are about 90% the same for almost everything. DW doesn't really care about decorating too much, so she basically lets me make most of the decisions. She likes my taste in design, so it works out for us.
