If DC does not eat what you make them for a meal....

do you let them not eat it, or keep making something different until they actually eat something??

I only make 1 meal (which consists of 2-3 items, all of which both kids like/eat). If they do not want to eat it for whatever reason, then they don't eat. My belief is that if they are hungry, they will eat.

I always keep my box of oatmeal as a back up. I kinda know that she likes hamburgers, meatballs, meatloaf, hamburgers, hotdogs, pasta, eggs etc...so basically if I make chicken I have to have a backup. She absolutely LOVES her veggies so she always does really well with health factored in.

Cereal is my back up. If it was up to DD, she wouldn't eat at all so me holding out with what she loves does no good. I try regular meals...sometimes she'll eat a little and sometimes she won't.

If he doesn't eat what I make, that's that.

He has yet to wake up or anything from hunger, so I am sure he won't starve.

One meal. If she doesn't eat it, then she doesn't have anything else. It's rarely ever a problem because of this rule.

I do this a lot right now actually. DS eats when he gets home from daycare and usually DH doesn't even get home til after he is done.

Like tonight, DS had grilled cheese and DH and I are having taco bell....

Re: If DC does not eat what you make them for a meal....

When they were little (2-3 years old) I would give them our food - but also have some of 'their' food on the ready. For example - they would try lamb chops with carmelized string beans, tomato mint salad and couscous... but if they didn't like it I had a small chicken cutlet ready to chop up and put in the couscous and a plain tomato and a few plain beans for them to eat.

Now that they are older they eat with us. If they say they aren't hungry - they don't get dessert. If they get hungry later - I will warm their plate for them. If they really don't like something that I am making (Robbie doesn't like beef), I normally will let him eat a Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich or a bowl of cereal instead. But regardless - they sit at the table until dinner is done. Even if they aren't eating.

My SIL got caught in a trap of making seperate dinners for everyone. To this day she makes 2-3 different suppers per night!

Same here! Well, I didn't have Taco Bell. but he only eats what we eat on the weekends. Every other night, he eats at my moms and DH and I eat when he goes to bed. But sometimes on the weekend, if I know he would like something else better, like let's just say fish sticksChat Icon , then he'll have his fish sticks and we'll have whatever we are having. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Re: If DC does not eat what you make them for a meal....

Ok so i may be out of the norm, but my DS is 10 months old, and i usually make him a separate meal if we are eating shell fish (which is often) or if we are eating something spicy. Other then that he eats what we eat.

I guess my question to those who make one meal and one meal only, what if you are eating muscles fra diavlo, will you not make something else for your children? I ask bc I do make it often, and i LOVE it spicy.

They either eat what I make for dinner or they can have a bowl of cereal..Im not serving up a smorgasbord. Surprisingly once I implemented this rule they suddenly decided to start trying new things..

Re: If DC does not eat what you make them for a meal....

I think tonight was the 1st time Nicholas actually ate what we ate (we BBQ'd). Normally I eat what I eat, Emma eats her Gerber foods usually and Nicholas aka Mr. Picky eats chicken nuggets or breakfast for dinner.
I can't really tell Nicholas you can't eat if you don't eat what we're eating since he is very underweight as it is, so he needs to eat something.

I always give DD what we are eating. If she doesn't eat it (like tonight for some reason) she will get some cheese, so she eats something, but I don't make a separate meal. So, tonight she had cheese and baked potato, because for whatever reason, she didn't want chicken Chat Icon

At this stage of the game, if they don't eat, they go hungry and will not get anything else. They are 2 and 4, so they understand. When they were younger, I might have gotten something else for them, but I certainly didn't want to get in that habit. They have pretty much always eaten what I made or they go hungry. Yeah, I'm a bad mom!
