FH said get some ratchets, pliers, tape measure, screws etc.
Dewalt makes great battery operated tools and they last a long time. But if its just a basic kit for a home(not really used for heavy duty work), your best bet might be to go to Sears and get their craftsmen tools. The warranty would work out better for you
(this is coming from FH lol)

I would get a screwdriver set with various sizes and heads or a cordless screwdriver with various bits - but I don't think you need a wrench set right away.
for a new house - tape measure, stud finder, picture hangers, hammer, pliers, small saw

Re: I'd like to buy my hubby a tool box w/tools...
a screwgun is useful for so many basic projects like hanging window treatments. A hand saw is good to have. A short level is also good for hanging art & other things. a 3-ft step ladder is great for inside projects. A small shop-vac is awesome to have. Sears & Home Depot also sell variety packs of hardware like misc nails, screws & picture hangers. All of the basic hand tools are great too.

Re: I'd like to buy my hubby a tool box w/tools...
i would get individual pieces Jenn.
My dad bought DH a ton of tools as a house warming gift for us.
for a tool box i say get craftsman pieces like pliers, rachets, hammer, screwdrivers, levels (different sizes) etc...
as far as big tools... but depending how handy he is
my dad bought DH Ryobi and dewalt tools circular saw nail guns (3 different sizes ) but DH has an air compressor) table saw tile saw
and we have pretty much used everything already
OH AND THE BEST GIFT WE GOT - was a SHOP VAC!!!!!! We use it for everything.. there have been so mabny big messes in this house as we are fixing it!!!
a drill is always a big thing.

It is on the expensive side...but DH uses all of these ALL the time so it was worth the $$

DH has that set.
Dewalt is expensive, but they have excellent guarantees. After 2 years, a battery shorted in his screw gun and broke it. It was replaced, no problem.
DH also built a deck, gutted a kitchen, bath and moved three walls in our house. If your DH isn't that into construction and more odds and ends, you can get cheaper tools.
I would also buy nails, screws, picture hanging hooks, tape measure, laser level, stud finder.
eta: I agree with Gina - SHOP VAC!

Re: I'd like to buy my hubby a tool box w/tools...
A cordless drill is great, but I would buy one from a set that you can exchange the batteries. Right now, I'm starting my Craftsman C3 series. The same batteries are used for all the tools. Other brands have the same concept. That way, you don't need 5 different batteries, with 5 different chargers for a drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw, router, etc. You can buy them one at a time (like I'm doing), and they'll still all work together.
I'm a fan of Craftsman, but there are other quality brands that have a lifetime guarantee on hand tools. A screwdriver set, plier set, hammer, locking pliers, monkey wrenches, hand saw, caulking gun, measuring tape, levels (at least a one foot and a 3 foot), stud finder, shop vac, or any combination is good. Don't get too much, because DH really needs to figure out what tools he needs/wants. I usually buy tools based on an upcoming project. That way, I'll know that I'll use it immediately, and I'll probably use it again. If I never have a project that needs that tool, I obviously don't need it.

As someone very familiar with the Craftsmen sets (I drool over the catalog whenever it comes... , there are way too many sets to just say "Get a Craftsmen set". Some of the sets are over $4,000, and still won't have all the tools you need.....

Re: I'd like to buy my hubby a tool box w/tools...
DH uses DeWalt for work and they are wonderful. They are a bit expensive but the quality is really great. I got DH a bunch last year for christmas.
One of those wall leveler things that puts the line across for you is great. Comes in real handy when you want to hang a bunch of stuff. Also a stud finder.
One of those snake lights is good for if he has to get into a dark spot.
screwdrivers of different sizes
T-square
Snips
Utility knife
Safety googles or glasses and gloves.

You should see the tools my DH has for work. Verizon treats their employees very well when it comes to tools. Most of his tools are DeWalt but they are some amazing tools

(this is coming from FH lol) Sears is good. Cause if you get the craftsmen tools and it breaks they replace it for FREE!
