Ice Dams/Icicles coming off gutters anyone?
Is anyone else having large amts of icicles coming off their gutters? ANd massive amts of water/ice coming off due to the rain and existing snow on the roof?
Is this normal for the amt of snow we have had? Right now water is pouring down the side of my house coming from the gutter and there's just so much snow up there that's now melting in this rain. Worried it's going to get inside somehow!

Is there lots of snow left on your roof? Ours has so much but so do the homes around us. I just worry b/c its our first winter here and not sure what's normal and what's just due to the increase in snow this year.

Re: Ice Dams/Icicles coming off gutters anyone?
This year seems to be worse than usual. I think we normally have a big snowfall, then it warms up for a few days and the snow doesn't last (at least not on the roofs). This year, it got cold, snowed, then stayed cold, then snowed some more, then still stayed cold. The sun is melting the edges and top of the snow, so it's just enough to make major ice dams.....

exactly!
What do we do about them? Just leave them and pray?
I have read it has to do with attic insulation (and gutter guards too) but I dont think it does in this case, based on this year's weather.

For right now, yeah. Unless you want to go up on a ladder and deal with it... This is the first time I remember it being this bad. I'm seriously thinking about the ice dam wires that you put along the edge of the roof and gutters to melt the snow.
This year, it's not related to attic insulation. Typically what causes ice dams is that when the gutters and the air are below freezing, and the attic has poor insulation, the house melts the snow on the roof, and when it hits the gables/gutters, it refreezes. Right now, we don't have that issue. It's the surface of the snow that is melting and refreezing, not the bottom, on top of the roof shingles.
