ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence the "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) campaign. The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE." For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.

Re: ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
This idea has been around for quite a long time. I have heard from police and paramedics, though, that they aren't usually going thorugh someone's phone at the scene of an accident where someone is unconscious or unable to speak. They are too busy helping the person. Assuming the cell phone remains with the victim and remains undamaged, these entries can be helpful to hospital personnel.
ETA - It's also not exactly universal yet. You should also consider having a "home" number stored (if you don't live alone) or some other easily identifiable number in there. Last names help, too -- as medical personnel are likely to assume those with your last name are your kin.
It's also more important to put emergency contact info in your wallet - close to your own ID!

The idea is true, but the reality isn't. There are thousands of types of phones, some with passwords, all with different types of menus. Paramedics cannot possibly go through someone's phone and look for this info. Hospitals may, since they have more time.
It's a good idea to have it, but it doesn't mean it will be used. The snopes article has a lot of good info about pros and cons, etc.

No, it doesn't hurt to do it IN ADDITION to other things... The best thing you can do is put emergency contact info in your wallet, right near your ID. They will be looking to identify YOU first.

This is true. In my years as an EMT we never searched for someone's cell phone. We would never call anyone either, the idea is to get the person off the scene and to the hospital as quickly as possible. For an unconsious person, the most the police would do is look for the person's wallet so we could at least have an identification to put on the report, although sometimes this didn't happen either, and the person went to the hospital as a John/Jane Doe.
It may be of some help at the hospital,it certainly can't hurt.

As someone whose boss's daughter was identified as her mother after a fatal car accident (They used the luggage tag after the fire was put out & the daughter used her mom's luggage), I would think that anything that can help identify you & your loved ones is a help at the hospital.
I would much rather have paramedics help me than worry about contacting someone. But later in the hospital, it's definitely helpful.

Re: ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
Everyone needs to put ICE in their phone...My Mom was in a bad car accident last May...She had a seizure while she was driving and when she woke up, the cop was asking for her phone number so he could call my Dad...My Mom had no clue what was going on, did not remember who she was or what had happened to her...She only remembered my name, her daughter..So, the cop went into her phone, found my name and called me...Now, my Mom is a big advocate for ICE.

Re: ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
DH had it in his phone. But the detective found a card from DH's friend in his wallet who is a Suffolk County Sheriff and they contacted him. Unfortunately that friend did not have my contact either. The friend ended up calling 4 different friends looking to get my cell phone number to let me know DH was seriously injured. Than DH's partner finally asked them to look in his cell phone. That's when they found my number and called me.
We both still have it listed in our phones along with "wife" and "husband".

Re: ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
Kevin and I both have each other in our phones under "ICE". I heard about this a while ago from my mom, she has my brother down as her "ICE".
It makes sense and good to have stored, even if it's never actually used, better safe than sorry.

Re: ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
I had a friend who was a cop who said instead of the ICE thing under listing put husband or mom or something like that. That way, they know to call the husband or someone close rather than trying to figure out something!

Re: ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"
I first found out about this last year when my boss' wife called and ICE appeared on his caller ID. I thought she was his drug dealer. He explained it to me and I think it is a good idea. It can't hurt to utilize it. DH has me in his phone as Wifey. I have him in mine as Hubby-ICE.

Yup! The last thing we do on a scene is look for ICE in the phone. Maybe the hospital does, but in the field there is NO time! It's a great idea, but not really practicle for paramedics.
