I wish I would've said something...feeling guilty!!

I was at Walmart with Frankie and as I got on line, I came upon a woman repeatedly spanking her child. The little girl had to be 2.5 years old tops and was wearing a dress, and every time she slapped her, you heard it!! She was screaming at her for running away while slapping her. She slapped her maybe 5-6 times, screamed some more and then gave her one really hard slap. We all just stood there like a deer in headlights, very awkward!! The little girl was hysterical and saying how sorry she was!Chat Icon

I so badly wish I would've said something, but my first thought was this lady is going to beat the shitttt out of me! She was huge and evil looking!

I cannot stop thinking about that little girl and I so badly wish I would've said something!!Chat Icon

I likely wouldnt have said anything either but my gut response would have been "Please sir can I have some more?"

I wouldnt have said aything.

I slap my children's butts. Not necessarily repeatedly, but if my kid ran away and I was panicked, they might get it more than once. Public place or not.

And I'm sure that girl learned her lesson to never run away.

Sorry you felt uncomfortable though

It's totally different. I think the difference lies in whether or not you are spanking/hitting your child out of anger as opposed to doing it the way you did.

Re: I wish I would've said something...feeling guilty!!

I wouldn't have said anything even though it may have been uncomfortable to watch. I wouldn't want someone butting in on my parenting since its not their business. My DD is only 2months old so I haven't been confronted with this but I am sure she will be spanked if she does something like run off and panic me.

However, the extreme she went to was not something I would do, I can't say its wrong because its different from the way I would have handled it. Hope that makes sense.

I had run into a similar situation at the mall a couple months ago and felt so bad for not saying anything directly to the mom, but what could I have said? I doubt the mom would've listened to my parenting advice.

I did mention to my MIL, who was with me, that the girl (around 2-2.5yo) seemed sooo tired and didn't want to follow her mom around shopping anymore. I did say out loud that I don't think being tired warrants a beating in a children's clothing store.

Chat Icon That poor little girl. I know that it can be trying deal with children & discipline in public. I've wondered many times if people judge me when I need to discipline my daugther in public. It sounds like this lady was out of control though. So sad. Chat Icon

There is a big difference between spanking a child and beating a child....

Re: I wish I would've said something...feeling guilty!!

my heart broke the other day in a store. this little boy must've been 1 or so, no more than 2. he was so cranky and tired (hugging on his dad) when all of a sudden he bit his dad. apparently he was a repeat offender cause his father either lightly smacked his mouth or did something i didn't see it but i did hear him say "NO BITING". that poor little boy cried his little heart out i felt AWFUL. his mother picked him up and his father said "he's got to learn not to bite!"

i know i did the same thing to allison when she would bite me, but somehow seeing it done to another little one was so much more heart breaking. Chat Icon
