I think my son broke my diswasher....
DS was playing with the display on the dishwasher the other night and accidentally started it. I hit the "cancel" button and it stopped.
Last night, I went to run it, and no matter what button I pressed, the light would just blink and nothing would happen.
I tried hitting the "start" button - all it did was turn the water on for about 5 seconds, all of the lights lit up in the right order (fill, heat, scrub, rinse, dry) and then it drained. All of that within 30 seconds.
We do not have the manual - it was there when we bought the house.
Please please please tell me we don't need a new dishwasher.....

Look up the manufacturers website for the manual. The manual should have a page about errors/issues with steps on how to resolve.
If that doesn't work, call an appliance repair person.

It sounds like it may just need some sort of reset. I agree, look for the manual online or call the company & see if you can get a new one (manual, not dishwasher.)
And ps- your previous owners stink! You are supposed to leave the manuals for the new people!

I know that some dishwashers have a LOCK feature. When you press 2 buttons, it locks the dishwasher so children cannot use it. Maybe he locked it? Call the maker of it and they can help you see which 2 buttons lock it (if it locks). I think that is what it is.

I'm not sure he actually locked it, though - the start button worked - it just went through the same exact thing that happened when he accidentally started it and I stopped it right away.  
It's a Kitchenaid and at least 5 years old.... I'll have to do some more investigating when I get home from work.

DS broke my parents dishwasher just last week pressing all the buttons in the front. It would not even turn on. My dad starting taking it apart today and found that one of the fuses (i think that's what it was) behind one of the buttons was burned and once he changed it, the machine was back to working like normal. Took a few hours though.

If you need a good repair guy I can recommend Phil - Carefree Appliance - (631) 661-6261. He's south shore Suffolk (I think in Babylon) but I know he was able to recommend someone on the north shore for another poster here so if you're reasonably close to his area give him a call.

try resetting the dishwasher by shutting off the electrical breaker and turning it back on
