I think I pulled a muscle in my brain...

This may sound like a joke, but I'm being serious! I was cleaning the house last night and I bent over to pick something up from the floor and I felt something "pull" in the base of my skull. It was like a shooting pain/strain/pull that shot from my neck to the top of my head on the left side. Afterwards, I still feel a strain on the left back side of my head. It doesn't feel like I bumped it or anything (which I didn't), it almost feels similar to when you pull a muscle in your leg. It doesn't hurt, per say, at least not always- I feel a constant pressure or strain there and sometimes I feel like a twinge when I move my head. I also have slight discomfort behind my left eye. It feels better when I rub it or lean my head back and close my eyes. I thought it would be better when I woke up this morning but nope. The very same. Now, obviously, you guys aren't experts on this, but I can't get to a doctor (and probably wouldn't go if I could) but I'm trying to convince myself that my brain is not swelling up or falling out of my nose.

Anybody ever experience anything like this before?

I get something similar a couple of times a year, since I was a kid. I will turn my head wrong( or not, sometimes it's the slightest movement) and I feel this surge of pain shooting up from the base of my neck, for a good minute I can't move and it almost feels like my tongue goes numb if that makes sense? But it's always all gone within a few minutes, I never felt it the next day. I'm no expert, but you probably pulled something. I know you said you probably wouldn't go to the Dr....but if you don't feel back to normal tomorrow morning, please go....better safe...

I think I know what you're talking about. I head to the chiropractor when I feel something like this. Chat Icon

Thanks guys! I had a little mini panic attack thinking I had something terrible like a brain tumor. I spoke to my aunt and she said the same thing- probably a pulled muscle. She told me to take a hot bath and if it's not better to go to a doctor or chiropractor. Thanks for not telling me I'm being a big hypochondriac. Chat Icon Chat Icon It still hurts though. Chat Icon

Ugh i HATE that !! happens all the time tho. Not often but enough that I refer to it as a neck Twang.

Hits you random too, turning your head, bending down etc.

It does get better tho.. still see someone if you like (i'm not a chiro fan tho too many years doing claims to support them much).

Ugh! Glad to hear it's going to go away, because it's REALLY annoying. I can't say that it hurts but it's uncomfortable and constant. I actually have a GREAT chiro in Queens who helped me out a few years ago, so if it's not feeling better in a couple of days I'm going to visit him. But I know what you mean- he even tried to tell me to keep coming back and I just said "Yeah, no, I'm fine. I'm not doing that." Chat Icon It just sucks that it's so close to Christmas! Chat Icon

Yes. Could be a pinched nerve

Yes. Could be a pinched nerve from a herniated disk in your neck. I have gotten that before...like a weird pulling feeling that shoots through your head in the back. I havent gotten that in years but it was scary. I always thought it was a pinched nerve. I wound up having a herniated disk in my neck years later, so I think its related to that.

YES! That exactly! I bet that's what it is. Anything in particular that you did that helped? I'm taking a hot bath and then some Tylenol PM and knocking out when I get home, but other than that, I'm stumped.

It just really freaked me out since it happened when I was home alone late last night (DH had his Christmas party) and I didn't know what to do! I'm usually not a worrier when it comes to aches and pains in my body, but when it comes to my head (brain, ears, throat) it gets me spooked! I just feel like there's so many vital functions going on up there and I don't want ANY of them to be compromised! Chat Icon

Thanks again for your response! You are definitely making me feel better. It might have been more noticeable before since I was worrying about it. Now I only really feel it when I turn my head to the left or down.

Yes. I went through this at the end of the summer. Ended up in PT. It helped a lot!
It turned out I had a small sprain in my neck (no idea how it happened), but, after seeing my primary care, 2x and then a neurologist (who sent me for the MRI), my answer was PT.

I got heated therapy, a massage, and then did a few exercises.

I hope you feel better soon!Chat Icon

I hope you feel better soon. Right now, try moist heat to loosen up the muscles.
