I think I need some hugs
I'm just really depressed lately about being here in grad school. I'm miserable, and I have a few more years to go. But if I quit, I'll never forgive myself and I'll disappoint my family. I can't do that. But I really am just nervous, scared, depressed about the whole thing. My research isn't going so well. My paper that I just submitted isn't enough for a thesis, so I have to get more done in my new lab. It's just scary because there's NO guarantee that my experiments will work. To make matters worse, DH is miserable here too and he's staying for me. So I feel awful about this too. I can't concentrate on anything today which is counter productive and it sux.
And I have probably ranted about this before, but today and this week has been especially bad.

Don't give up!!! I know it is hard to think that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but both my DH and I were in grad school and thought a milliion times about quitting, but are so happy we didn't. We do know people that did quit and it was a big regret. I remember crying about exams and papers and never thinking that I would pass, but I did and you will too!

I used to feel like that a lot while getting my degree, but things won't always be this bad and all your hard work WILL pay off in the end.

I remember that feeling. But the whole ordeal made me a much stronger person and a more confident scientist (which matters even if you don't plan to do another experiment for the rest of your life!).
You'll get there, I promise!

Not the same field, but law school was an evil, emotional roller coaster for me. It's worth it to stick it out - It will be worth it in the end.
In the meantime, plan some nights off - some fun time for you and DH to at leat try to enjoy where you are now.
And vent when you need to. That's what we're here for!

Thanks girls. It's terrible that my DH is so sad being here too. I hate to see him this way, and had I finished school earlier, he wouldn't be so miserable.

Can I ask where you are? Is he working while you're there? I'd find time to go out and explore the area - do fun things together. Get him to realize it's not going to be the worst place to live for the next few years.
I can understand preferring to be somewhere else or being "homesick" -- but being where you don't want to be only makes you miserable if you let it. Is he making an effort to get out and see what's around? Is he doing things that he likes to do or trying to find things to do there that he likes?

First - for the week your having. Sorry to hear that!
Second - focus on the fact that this is temporary. You guys might not be loving it now but down the line you will look back and "remember when" you were first married and in grad school.
Third - this is great advice that PP gives. If I remember correctly you are in MD. I live in MD too and work in DC. I don't know what your DH's interests are, but there are TONS of things to do and see in DC. You should definitely take advantage of seeing that stuff while you are living in this area, esp if you later plan to move away. My DH and i often pick up the weekend section and see what's going on in DC on weekends we don't have other plans. There's lots of stuff you can do for free too - which is awesome (museums, zoo, etc...). We've also followed several suggested "on your own" walking tours of less touristy parts of DC. And, Balto has a lot to offer too. I think if you both try to make a conscious effort to do things like this in your free time that you will have fun and create some happy memories of your time in this area.
Good luck!!

Re: I think I need some hugs
It's more that we both HATE what we're doing. We don't want to do research after we finish, but I'm stuck doing it until I graduate. DH wants a financial modelling job or a google type job, but those are in NY. AND, they want ex-scientists, so if he gets some job here in DC in the meantime, his marketability suffers. We try to get out and do things on the weekends, but it's the awful workdays that I can't stand.

Sorry you're not happy in your jobs/school. I know all too well how not being happy or being super stressed professionally can creep into and effect your general happiness. I've been there. It stinks. I empathize. My best advice is to focus on the good things in your lives, you guys as a couple, fun times together and/or with friends, and your hobbies... that's the only way I know that you can try to prevent the bad stuff from totally taking over your whole mood.
Again, sorry you're feeling this way and htat you are having a bad week! I hope you have a good weekend!
