I think I may use a bottle sterilizer now...any thoughts

I was dead set against it (just more clutter) but after visiting a friend with a 6 week old baby I was sold. It sterilizes in 6 minutes and she does all of her bottles first thing in the morning and she is good to go. The one point that she made that convinced me is that she doesn't run the dishwasher everyday (either do I), so rather then run it everyday just for bottles now I could just use this.

The one she has and I got is the Avent® iQ24 Sterilizer

im not getting one b/c when i asked a doctor friend of mine, she said they only really need to be sterilized once a week. Cleaning every day with warm soapy water is enough.

I dont want the clutter either.

I can count on one hand how many times I used mine. Total waste of $$ if you ask me. If you want to sterilize, just put them in hot boiling water for a couple of minutes.

I use mine every day. My sister (she is an RN labor and delivery) said they are very sensetive to bacteria. I told her I was just washing the bottles and she really said it was not a good idea for the 1st 3mos.. so i started using the advent again.. this was just my experience.. Also I have to say.. The week that I just washed and not steralized she didnt get sick!! So go figure!! Chat Icon

I use the Avent sterilizer. I love it- I clean them first thing in the morning and don't have to worry about them. I hate clutter also, but this is one item I am glad that I have.

As soon as things come out of the sterilizer (or dishwasher) and are exposed to air, they are no longer sterile, so we never saw the point.

that's why we never used them. bottles don't have to be sterile, they only have to be clean. nothing your baby touches is going to be sterile in life.

in the year that DS used bottles, i boiled/sterilized them exactly twice. once when they were new, once when i wanted to give them a better cleaning.

Ditto.

I vaguely remember boiling them 1x when I took them out of the package, before DS was born. After that, whenever I ran the dishwasher I'd throw in the bottles that weren't already filled and ran them through a hot wash. At 18 mos DS is still roaming around so I guess it worked for us.
