I really need support
So I went last week for the follow up sono to my failed AFP (which came back postive for Spina Bfifda) and we got a great pic of the spine and were sorta relieved. Even the tech said looks good to me. Well, the doctor had a chance to intrepret the results and called me just now and said "no spina bfida, but we saw a soft marker on the spine that could indicate down's syndrome" What the heck!! Downs' came back negative in the AFP and now its a marker. even my doctor was stumpped. I'm at a loss!! so now I have to go for an amnio on thurs. and won't hear results for 2 weeks. please tell me how does one live for 2 weeks awaiting results like that?!!!!!!!!! I want to completely shut down. and then have to wait for THAT call!!

Let me just say I'm so sorry you are going through this
I didn't have an amnio, but my friends all said the same thing...they were on pins and needles for two weeks waiting for the results.
I hope these next two weeks fly by.

Re: I really need support
gosh, I am so sorry you have to go through that stress. I dont understand how the test would come up negative if there was something wrong. I know there are lots of false postives but I havent really heard of false negatives being an issue. Try not to get all worked up.. it sounds like your doctor is just trying to be overly precatious.. hang in there..

I am sorry you are going through this.
Please keep in mind that the AFP and Amnio can both have false positives. I personally know of four couples that this happened to and thier children are all healthy and thriving. Stay postive and remember that none of these tests are 100%.

Re: I really need support
Everything will be OK. My friend refused the amnio and her protein levels were high. She went through basically 6 months of wondering if her baby had downs (she was not going to abort if the amnio came back that the baby did have downs, so she didn't want to take the risk).
Well, she had her baby today and he is perfectly healthy. No downs!
So, just because they see something that MIGHT be or COULD be, doesn't mean that it WILL be.
Good Luck

Re: I really need support
Try to stay positive (as hard as that may seem right now). It is VERY possible that you got false positives.

Re: I really need support
From what I have read false positives are very common. This happened to my co-worker- same exact thing.... she was a wreck everything turned out fine. Try not to worry- this is one of those things that are out of your control. I am really sorry you are going through this. We are all here for you!
ETA: for spelling.

Re: I really need support
What I have heard about these "soft markers" is that 9 times out of 10 they are nothing. They end up resolving themselves and babies are born 100% healthy. We just have much more advanced technology these days that picks up things they never used to be able to see. My friend had chosen no AFP test but several soft markers showed up on her ultrasound so she worried for a lot of her pregnancy (even after a sono where they had been resolved). Her baby was born totally fine. I'll bet your little one is doing just fine in there. I would be a nervous wreck too so I won't tell you to relax or anything. Just try to have faith that you have a healthy baby growing in there.

Re: I really need support
Im really sorry you are still going through this. All I can say is that the false results are very high with this screening...and that to keep that in mind, the AFP is ONLY a screening....it's NOT a diagnostic test and if you have a negative results it only means that the doctor should do follow up testing to rule things out.
I will for you that everything is OK
