Re: I need help with my one month old DD- long

I agree with the above posters, at this point you just have to feed her when she is hungry, she will eventually (soon I think!) start to fall into a pattern. My DS is 6 weeks and at around 4 weeks he started to fall into more of a sleep / eating pattern. But I try to tell myself that he is a growing baby and he will let me know if he is hungry and when he does NOT want any food...as for the crying, if she is not hungry, do what I always do, I have a mental checklist in my mind, like - is he hungry? no just fed him. is he wet? no just changed him? sick - no. probably just needs a little bit of snuggle time / soothing.

Re: I need help with my one month old DD- long

I agree with many others that she is still hungry. Don't worry about overfeeding. Don't worry about a routine-it will come in time. Tho at that age I think my boys were taking 4 oz and then would sleep 3 hrs until it was time to eat again. If she is draining her bottle she is stil hungry

so we come here for support. and advice. we only want what is best for our little angels. we definitely don't need BTDT moms making us feel bad!

I don't think any of us BTDT moms were trying to make her feel bad -maybe just put her expectations in more realistic terms and help her to understand that this ends and routines do get established.

Also- I would be scared about sleeping with her in the bed....I don't know if it's the right advice- but I would try to avoid that. Maybe she will sleep in the bouncer or the moses basket?

Can you put the moses basket in the bed so at least there's som sort of barrier?

(ETA: I was dreaming about this subject last night- that's why I'm focusing there)

Me, I would feed her if that is what is soothing her. The worst that can happen is she'll spit up if she is over stuffed.

Re: I need help with my one month old DD- long

I want to clarify that I have absolutely NO problem whatsoever feeding her when she's hungry. I do not want to starve her and I have been feeding her constantly. I just wanted to ask if it was NORMAL that she was always so hungry because the DOCTOR told me 3oz every 3hrs and it's not even coming close to that most of the time. I just wanted to know that I was doing the right thing.

As for the scheduling/routines- I know it won't be perfect for a long time, but i've been reading posts on here lately about other infant moms having some sort of routines set up- even loosely. I just thought I would try it too.Chat Icon

The moses basket is in the bassinet. I think she would sleep better on her belly, but i'm afraid to do that too. She's been sleeping on her belly since I fed her at 8:40 withouth budging.

ETA: Luckily, you have a perfectly normal newborn and they do outgrow this stage rather quickly.

I don't think this was necessary. I am perfectly aware that I am lucky she is completely healthy. I am NOT complaining about feeding her. AGAIN_ all I wanted to know was that I was doing right by her.

Can you put her on her belly to fall asleep then flip her?

If she sleeps better on her belly- let her, at least during the day when you're awake to check on her frequently. JMO.

It wasn't meant with any malicious intent. It was meant in the exact opposite way. It was meant to reaffirm that your DD is doing exactly what she should be. Sorry, I really thought you were asking for some advice and I WAS trying to help.

ITA with this. My ped told me to let DS nap on his belly b/c it would help him sleep, and keep him from getting a flat head too during the day for naps

It's good to get in some kind of a routine but know that it might change all the time. Kaydyn was a grazer...she literally would drink 2-3oz every hour or so during the day. They say babies will not overeat so I think as long as she is hungry then feed her. A friend of ours son ate 45-50oz a day in the begininng. He was just a hungry boy. He is just about to turn 1 and he is the same size at my 20 month old.

Kaydyn was like your DD also, when she was hungry she let everyone in the world know. She would not take a pacifier, only the bottle. But starting around 5-6 weeks she started to sleep more at night which was nice.

Just hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I do let her sleep on her belly during the day. She is right now. She definitely sleeps better that way, but i'm afraid to do it at night.

Re: I need help with my one month old DD- long

My immediate thoguht was your not giving her enough at one feeding.

My son was eating 4oz's a few times in the hospital! I would keep feeding her at one feeding more till she seems fuller for sure.

And at one month old, I would try for a bedtime routine much later on and see if that works a bit better.

the first 1-3 months are sooo hard to figure them out....Go with the flow as much as possible....It will get easier Chat Icon

Sometimes she finishes and is still sucking air. Then the next bottle i'll make more and she'll be pushing the bottle out of her mouth with an oz left in it. I guess it will change each time...? I can't seem to figure out a good amount.

I used to make a pitcher of formula each night. I would feed her the amount she usually ate 3-4oz and then if she was still hungry I would heat up a little more. That way I wasn't wasting too much formula making bottle she would not finish.

We kinda alternated like that for a while. It was between 3-5oz's and it took a while to get the right amount, which ended up being 4 oz's , but even then we still had some issues like your saying.

I think I would aim for 5 oz's and just accept maybe losing some formula each bottle and see what happens. Sounds like she will stop when shes full....so you dont have to worry about her spitting too much up or throwing it up ( and if she did, I guess that would be a good signal too that it was too much. )

Does she fall alseep right after eating? Sometimes my niece does that and then wakes up still hungry. My sister tries to keep her awake after the 4-5oz's for an hour and then she falls asleep and when she wakes up is hungry again, but its a good tiem frame in between, not 2-2 and 1/2 hours. ( Does that make sense? )

Jen, the same thing happens with me...so I always make 7oz (she's 8 weeks now, I think at 1month she was having 4-5oz)...once in awhile if she leaves an oz, so be it. I'd rather her be full and waste an oz than hungry and fussy for hrs after... Chat Icon

My DD is also LOVING her belly sleep so for naps she's on her belly...at night we start her on her belly and flip her when she's passed out....ALSO, we just bought the angelcare monitor so its goes off when baby stops moving for 20sec....so now I have some piece of mind when she's on her belly

Its amazing, she's on her belly she's asleep like that
on her back, she cries and cries...I guess she's a rebel already Chat Icon

This was my thought too. Start offering her more and let her eat what she wants. Make a 4 or 5 oz bottle. Maybe she will eat all of it, or maybe she will only eat 2oz, but she will eat until she is full either wayt

Have you put her in the swing? My babies used to nap in the swing every day, and they would sleep for hours at a time.

Re: I need help with my one month old DD- long

My Ds is 6 weeks and we have no set routine yet, although I'm starting to see some patterns in his eat/wake/sleep routine. Little by little he is creating his own "schedule" although some days everything is out of whack. At this age I think you just have have to go with teh flow and not have too many expectations.

My DS was also having alot of trouble sleeping in the bassinet in our room. He would wake up 15 minutes every time I put him down, so I would wind up staying awake holding him almost the whole night. Last week we decided to try the crib and it is working out much, much better. I practiced putting him in there for naps to get him used to it and at first he was not happy with it. With time and practice, he is now sleeping much more soundly in there. Maybe it is more comfortable? He is still waking every 2- 3 hours to eat, but staying asleep in between.

Even though you are not ready to try the crib, maybe you should give it a shot. I have the video monitor and the angelcare monitor, which gives me peace of mind.

Re: I need help with my one month old DD- long

i think at one month i was bfing her every two hours..

she could very well be hungry. ltrust your instincts. if you tried every other way to soothe her and only feeding works, then just feed her...

she could be going through a growth spurt too..
