I need help with a block party we are having!!

My street is having a blockparty this month I need some ideas never had one before.

Anyone have any luck with throwing a blockparty what works what doesn't I would love to hear ideas! We have a meeting tonight.

Besides a DJ, stuff for the kids is always good.

It depends on the funds available though. A bouncy house, face painting, glow in the dark necklaces are always fun.

The hard part with giving out favors and such is that you never know how many kids will really be there, which houses actually paid to particpate, and how many stragglers came over from around the block.

I'm organizing mine now.

luckily we have a dj & musicians on the block, so they will be providing the musical entertainment.

We also priced out our options on a bouncy house & facepainter and went with the best deal. We'll have that going from 3-6.

You need to come up with a figure dollar wise that most people would be comfortable chipping in...usually $40-$50 per family is good. We didn't need as much, bc music is free.

"Drinks Around the Block"

Our block does this! It is great! You get to mingle with everyone. Each house has a signature drink and your guests get to walk to every house trying the drinks out. Just make sure you have one person stationed at your house for drink pouring.


We also have every house donate a bottle of wine and make up some baskets.

50/50 is a good thing too!

At my sister's block party they had a huge inflatable water slide (dual slides side by side. Both kids and adults loved this thing. They put it in the street. It was great for the afternoon heat. I think they got 4 hours on it. So they had it from like 2-6pm.

My DH and I are the organizers for our block party which is this weekend, assuming the weather cooperates.

Have you already gotten authorization to close off your street from your town?

How many households are invited?

Some of the games we're having are:
Egg Toss (for the adults)
Water Balloon Toss (for the kiddies)
Donut Game (hang donuts a pole and the first kids to finish the donut wins)
Bucket Brigade
Freeze Dance
(Prizes will be various gift cards)

We booked a DJ and Bounce House (with attendant) and normally we would have a cotton candy machine (with attendant) but opted not to based on our budget this year. (We don't normally hold our block party in July because of low turnout. September or June is usually a better turnout for us.)

Our block party is a BYO - food and beverages, but we supply the grill. In the past we had kegs, but put an end to that to avoid liability.

I also asked the ice cream man to stop by during the block party. I figured he could make a few bucks while making the kiddies happy.

I ordered a crapload of temporary tattoos for both girls and boys: Savvi Boys collection, Savvi Girls Collection and Ed Hardy for the older kids.

and I purchased a bunch of glowsticks too (necklaces and bracelets.)

We're also using wristbands so we know who paid and belongs there. We have a rather large block party (over 200 households invited), so it helps us control teens trying to crash looking for alcohol and what not. If you have a small block/neighborhood, they may not be necessary. (We normally have 50 households. This year because it's in July, we only have approx. 30, but we have over 100 kids alone.)

Oh, we also have a porta-potty. (I believe that's required by our town.) Again, if it's a small block, this may not be necessary.

my parents block is having a bouncy house and face painter and a dj.

inlaws block is having a bouncy house and dj and they do a 50/50 rafffle. 50 for the winner and 50 towards next years block party.

we always went around to the neighborhood businesses and asked if they would be willing to donate.... most would donate some type of gift certificate which we would do a raffle with.... 50/50... huge game a musical chairs....



we have had the fire dept show up with a truck.... pony rides.... bouncy house.

we have a 7/11 on the corner so they gave out free slurpees to the kids all day (they gave us special cups so they knew)....
