I just got my first review
at my new job - pretty amazing considering I've only been here 3 months. And, I have to say, it's such a nice, refreshing change to be recognized for my skills and accomplishments, instead of being told that I'm getting paid 40% less than my peers because "I'm a new mom"
I'm a broken record, I know, but I freakin' love this place

Good for you!!
I just started my new job the beginning of April, they had a paralegal appriciation day lunch the other day...I wasnt in so I didnt go but they gave each of us a $100 gift card to a restaurant group (there are 12 resturatns to choose from) I thought that was pretty nice considering my last place we got a $25 gc to a movie theather.

That is great news! Having a boss who appreciates your work makes all the difference.
I am assuming you were talking about your old job when you said you were paid 40% less than your peers for being a new mother. That is ridiculous! My good friend told me when she was pregnant, she was so worried to tell her boss (a woman). When she did, her boss not only was totally supportive of her, but told her she knew she would be even more productive than her peers BECAUSE she would be a mother! She said not only would she develop skills to handle pressure, multitask more efficiently, etc, but because she would have her baby to come home to she would waste less time "BS-ing" with co-workers, on the internet, etc.

Yes, it was my former employer. Big firm took over our little firm, and when they took over, the senior partner from the old firm came into my office and told me my new salary (which was 40% less than a first year associate - I was a 3rd year), and when I responded in shock, he said, "well, you know, they took into consideration the fact that you're a new mom and there's no way you can perform at the same level as the other associates" 
I only wish more employers were like your good friend's - her response is admirable

That is ridiculous, I can't believe first that they would do that and second that this person told you this was the reason! I'm glad you got out of there, you seem really happy with your new job!
I know, I definitely wish more employers were like my friend's boss. Actually my old boss reacted well when I told him I was pregnant, he even visited me in the hospital after she was born! So I can't complain. And my new boss is really supportive of me- I think it helps when your boss has kids of their own.
Lucky for me my friend's boss is sort of a mentor to me, when I got pregnant (after my friend so I knew her reaction) I sat and talked with her boss and she gave me a lot of advice. I still keep in touch with her, she's in a related field to mine so she's a great ally to have in the future.

Congrats. Being recognized for a job well done really does make a difference. Even if it just a verbal token of appreciation - it goes a long way. You should be really proud of yourself & keep up the good work!
