I have so many cute dresses

that just sit in my closet because I'm soooo self-conscious of a rash that I've had on my legs for a loooooong time. I'm talking 8+ years. Chat Icon

I've seen several different doctors and the final (we hope) diagnosis is that the rash is a side effect of some other hormonal issues. I've used so many prescription creams, lotions, ointments, pills, you name it. Nothing "cured" me. The rash has improved SO MUCH the past 4 months or so with the use of some homeopathic remedies (tea tree oil skin wash, cream, and sun!)- it doesn't hurt like hell anymore, but I'm probably scarred for life.

I use dermablend whenever I have to wear a dress to a wedding or something, but I always wear pantyhose over it "just in case". I even wear the toeless pantyhose so I can wear sandals!

Maybe this should be on the SUCKS board because I am definitely whiningggg... but it just hurts that I feel like everyone stares at me whenever my legs are exposed. I feel like a leper or something!

Does anyone have anything to recommend that will help cover this more than the dermablend already does? Maybe a spray foundation or something? (Not for daily use - but for occasions, like my sister's engagement party in 2 weeks?)

Thanks Chat Icon

Just want to give you some Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon bc I totally understand how you feel. When I look at other women, I always stare at their backs - everyone has such beautiful smooth backs. . .and my back is horrible! I had to go to a dermatologist for over a year and my back improved for my wedding day ( still wore my hair down and never took off my veil ) but I can't afford to go every single week anymore and it is back and worse than ever!

I hope you find something that works for you - and I am actually going to try the tree oil now!!!

Chat Icon I'm sorry you feel self conscious about it... that def SUCKS!

I don't know what it looks like, but have you tried like the jergens self tanning lotion? Maybe that will blend your skin better?

Is it an active rash or the left overs of a healed rash? Like scaring? Would a bleaching cream work to maybe lighten the scars?

I agree. Nic you're gorgeous!!! I think as women we all have something we're not entirely happy about and we find ourselves staring at others so we assume others stare at us as well. I'm sorry you have had so much pain from it Chat Icon Chat Icon but glad that its getting better.

thank you Chat Icon
just left over scars...Thank God. It took a while to get to this point!

Unfortunately, the jergens just accentuates the scars...they get darker than the rest of my skin.

heat makes it worse for me, but sun and saltwater makes it better!!

I did a few things -
I filled a basin with salt water and soaked for about an hour at least 1x a week

I wash both legs with tea tree oil skin wash 1-2x daily (purchased at www.puritan.com - they're located right in bohemia, but it was 26 cent ups shipping) - using a sea sponge, not a washcloth or puff.

i shave with disposable razors - i only use each razor once.

after the shower, i applied tea tree oil cream generously. (also purchased at www.puritan.com)

before bed every night i'd apply a layer of straight tea tree oil with a cotton pad. It's a natural antiseptic, so it stings a bit.

After years of antibiotics (both topical and oral), antifungals, biopsies, steriods (both orally and topical), TEA TREE OIL gets the job done.

I'm seeing an RE to try and get the hormonal issues under control. YAY PCOS. Chat Icon

Re: I have so many cute dresses

This may sound like a weird request but I'd love to see what it looks like.

Maybe it isn't as bad as you think it is.

You are such a beautiful girl, you have a beautiful face and such a glowing personality. I know it's such a personal thing, but if you wore cute dresses, people probably wouldn't notice your legs at all, there are so many great qualities that they'd notice otherwise.

THANK YOU!!!!!! she needs to hear this from someone other than me!!! maybe she will believe you!! its not as bad as she thinks!!!

AND lets be honest.. youre short, if youre wearing a dress people do not even really see your legs, if someone is looking at you at a downward angle your legs will hardly be showing!!!!

Actually, I use it every day and it is the only thing that keeps it from spreading and it definitely takes the redness out. But it does not make it go away totally - thank you for the rec though!!!!

Seriously! I'm sure someone would really have to be looking to see any scarring. Go and rock those cute dresses! If you have confidence no one will noticeChat Icon

Re: I have so many cute dresses

I actually think that will fade over time. In college I had a horrible rash under my arms and felt so self conscious about wearing tank tops. It was for a long time and eventually cleared up (I think because I lost weight). It took some time, but eventually my skin got to be so that you would never know I had a problem.

I honestly don't see anything at all! And definately not enough that you can't wear dresses.

Try wearing them to places where it will just be close friends/family first, until you get used to it. But I totally think it will be OK!

who is saying mean things about my darling Nikki....Chat Icon

your legs don't look bad at all.

I had a funky skin condition that comes and goes and when through HELL for a few years (they are still not sure what caused it, but I have a skin condition usually seen only in children Chat Icon Chat Icon ) they tried everything...biopsies....cream this, gel that...they even wanted to zap me with Ultraviolet light (uh, no thanks)

I used a lactaid lotion (prescription strength) that started to work...and I tired to balance my stress levels. when I have flare ups you can see it...all over my legs, torso and even my breasts.

it's red and itchy and it sucks.

BUT, I still wore/wear shorts, dresses and bikinis.

when people ask what is wrong with my skin, I tell them.

but most people don't even notice...and if they do, they don't say anything and probably don't really care that much.

pick up your head, stick out that awesome rack and show off your legs!!!!

you draw more attention by being so focused on it. don't let your fear of what people think stop you from doing ANYTHING...especially wearing something that you love and would feel GOOD in.

that's it...that's all I will say b/c I know what it's like to feel self conscious. I have hideous feet, but I still wear sandals. sometimes I don't care, but sometimes I wish I could walk on my ankles.

but my legs and ankles look good in sandals, so I figure and bunion (or two) won't detract too much from that.

same is true from the remnants of a rash. Chat Icon Chat Icon
