I have a question on something I have heard and don't quite understand..
Over the weekend, I was talking to some other moms, and they said that they go into DC's room and put the paci back in when it falls out and DC starts to cry, etc. throughout the night...sometimes 5-6 times...
I mentioned that DS could care less about the paci, and has never used it, and two of the moms told me that I should try to "just give him the paci at his 4 am feeding, and he may not want to eat..."
What are your thoughts on this? Could he just need a paci? I have never tried to give him one during the night, because he has never taken it. i am not against it by any means, but I think if he wakes every night at the same time, he is likely hungry, no?

If he doesn't want the paci then I wouldn't give it to him. DS is a paci addict. I put a bunch in his crib so he finds one in the middle of the night and pops it in his own mouth
Is there something else you can do to sooth him? Play music or something? I got a music box that projects a cute scene on the ceiling. DS has been doing great since I got that (well, sometimes)

This is how (and I just posted this on maybeamommy's thread) I got him to sleep through the night. Now some will argue, he will in turn cry to get you to put the paci back, but like I said, Ethan wasn't a fan of it to begin with and now just gives himself his fist to much on instead
My dr said the 4am feeding was more about habit than nutrition

I've actually heard that if they wake at the same time it's more of habit than hunger (from kellymom I believe).
I do try to give the paci at night when he wakes up and sometimes that satisfies him... I'm not sure if it's different for BF vs FF moms because BF babies might be more used to using the breast as a binky... KWIM?

Really? So, he doesn't even need that bottle? He is basically sleeping while he drinks it, but I guess i could try to phase it out....
It's just that he sleeps by 9:30, and then wakes at 4, and I am always hungry when I wake up, so I feel like he must be too.. Thanks for the help!!!!

I bought a really cute ladybug that projects stars and such, but he doesn't even need it..however I love it ...he wakes, and I give him the bottle, and he guzzles it in 30 seconds, so i have always assumed he was starving..he falls right back asleep, could care less that there is a starry night in his room..
Thanks, though, being that he doesn't care about the paci, I probably shouldn't start it now.

DS was never interested in the paci and we never really tried very hard once he showed his lack of interest.
At his age he might be waking up at the same time due to hunger or it could be habit. He is still young.
Either way I k now with my DS the paci just made him more mad because once it went in his mouth he expected to have milk and when that didnt happen he got MAD!

It works 90% of the time. If the bugger is REALLY crying (like he did last night, I give in and give him the babas) He's a little guy still, you know? But this was what my doc instructed us to do.

Personally...why start the pacifier if he doesn't want it? If he is draining his bottles at night then he's hungry. Giving him the pacifier isn't necessarily the answer plus then you'll have to go back in when it falls out.

He could just be waking out of habit - DS does that as well.
We only give him 3oz in the middle of the night in hopes to wean him off eventually. He wakes up occasionally and doesn't want to eat (I can tell by when I pick him up, his head is down on my shoulder and he's sleeping again right away).

This is exactly what I thought..thanks! He guzzles 7 ounces very fast at that feeding..so I didn't think it was out of habit, but I could attempt to get it later at like 5am....that would be nice
I agree...no paci for now...

I agree. Neither of my kids took a pacifer after the newborn stage and I was completely fine with that. If they don't need it to fall asleep or soothe, then why force a habit on them that often causes distress years later when they become some reliant on it. If your child is waking and drinking a bottle, he's hungry.
The best way to get rid of that 3 or 4 am bottle is to do a little dream feed before you go to bed. I did this with both my kids and it worked. At about 11:30 or so, I'd go in, pick them up out of their crib, they'd barely wake up, but still took a bottle, and it would hold them over until about 6am.

Same experience..She loves the paci but will sleep without it..if she does wake up in the middle of the night i try that first and she always goes back to sleep. Generally sleeps 6-7 swing, eats 7:30 sleeps till 6-6:30 every night at just under 4 months..when she was younger she did spit it out alot at night and cry for it...seems to have stopped since shes been STTN

Sounds like a great idea...will try it tonight. Thanks for your help!
