I have a ? about Down's syndrom
A friend of mine had a bloodwork done and had a 1/400 for Downs. They did an amnio but it dosen't come back until next week. The ultrasound measurements are normal.
Can you have normal ultrasound measurements and a 1/400 bloodwork and still have a normal child? What are the chances that the baby will be downs?
Thanks ladies.

There are 399 chances that the baby won't have downs and 1 chance that it will. Please keep in mind this is just a screening test and are often incorrect(our counselor told us 95% of positives are false positives.) 1/400 doesn't sound that high to me. How old is she?

She's 35. Her dr. told her it should be 1/2000 and she needed an emergency amnio.
It didn't sound right to me that's why I asked the boards.

Re: I have a ? about Down's syndrom
I'm 37, pushing 38 real soon.
Before my ultrascreen at 12 weeks, my risk of having a child with Downs was automatically put at 1:137 due to my age. After the ultrascreen, my risk went to 1:857 (that of a 27 year old). We relaxed (as we have/had no intention of doing an Amnio).
At 16 weeks, I had my AFP/Quad Triple Screen bloodwork done and my risk of having a child with Downs shows it's elevated 1:191. My Dr. had me push my Level II sono from 20 weeks to the beginning of my 18th week (next week), and said we can go by that first and THEN based on what the findings are, decide if we want to move ahead with the Amnio next week as well. This is what I intend to do.
While I'm so nervous and upset by all this, I also know that there is a 5% false positive rate with this particular screening test. My doctor also told us that they only recommend an Amnio if the results come back at 1:273 or less. 273 seems to be the cutoff.

It didn't sound right to me that's why I asked the boards. I am not a Dr or expert, but my Dr told me that b/c of my age I am already at 1/350. I am 35.
She might want to call a genetic counselor to discuss before having an amnio.
1/2000 is very high at any age from what I have been told.

Re: I have a ? about Down's syndrom
1/2000 doesn't sound right for 35, this is the info my Dr. gave me: age risk 32 1/725 33 1/592 34 1/465 35 1/365 36 1/287 37 1/255 38 1/177 39 1/139
according to her test, her odds of having a Downs child are lower than most women her age. 1/400 isn't a bad number, like a previous poster said she has 399/400 of having a healthy baby.

Re: I have a ? about Down's syndrom
From what I understand she had the genetic screening done and her chance for Downs came back very low. Her dr. said they needed to do an amnio so they did.
I'm sure that she was in shock when she spoke with the dr and i'm not getting the correct information.
Thank you very much for your replies. It was very helpful

Re: I have a ? about Down's syndrom
Sounds like your friend is going through exactly what we went through 2 months ago. My triple screen showed 1/273 for downs (my ultrascreen was 1/10,000). My amnio came back normal. The waiting is horrible but her chances are very good that it will come back normal.
I'm guessing they did not do a FISH which would have gotten her some results back in 48 hours.
(I'm 31...30 at the time this all happened)

Mine was 1 in 200-something, and I was fine - those odds are totally fine....

I am sorry but that doesn't sit right with me. When you are 35, your risks are automatically around 1 in 300. That's normal for your age. So her results after the test don't sound high risk at all in my experience. IMO, her risks did not indicate emergency amnio (if you got all the #s right).

Well, the odds of 1/400 are still there but the normal ultrasound probably changes the true odds and makes it less likely that the child has it. Chance of down syndrome is no worse than 400:1 or 399:1. I'd gamble on odds like that (I'd have further testing but I'm just saying that the chance of downs is still so small).

The way my dr feels is, if you don't have increased risks AFTER the test or if you fall in the normal range for your age, there is no need to even think twice about the results and no need to consider amnio (unless of course for personal reasons, you want a 100% guarantee). Esp with a quad screen and AFP test, which will double check the ultrascreen results.
Another way to look at it is, are the risks of having Downs greater than the risks of an amnio? That helps a lot of people decide also.

My doc said that at 35, your risk of having a baby with Downs is about the same as your risk of a miscarriage from an amnio. He said that is why they start to recommend the amnio at that age -- b/c the risk of having a baby with something wrong is greater than the risk of miscarriage. Before that, the risk of having a baby with a genetic problem is lower than the risk of miscarriage from the amnio.
