i feel like a failure!!

My 3month old will not sleep longer than 3 -3.5 hours at night. I am beyond sleep deprived! I have tried everything... swaddle, womb noise, bedtime routine. Nothing seems to work. I am on the verge of giving up breastfeeding if it means i can sleep for more than 2 hours at a time. Any suggestions would help! I feel like the only person in the world who has a 3 month old that doesnt sleep well at night. Is this normal?

Re: i feel like a failure!!

ive been putting michael john on his front since he can lift his head and turn it. he can do a half turn already. last night he slept 7.5 hours now going on 4 (still sleeping)

the night before he slept 9 hours straight.

i know were not suppose to put them on the belly until they roll but he sleeps much better. i have a monitor and i go to check him. started out doing this once he napped and transitioned it to bedtime.

Rylan is almost 10 weeks and is the same way. He also sleeps on his belly and that helped us out alot...it's the only way he'll sleep more than an hour. I know it's not for everyone but it worked for us.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You are not a failure at all! DS started sleeping (mostly) through the night around 3.5 months, but frankly, I think I was lucky (I consider it divine payback for many afternoons and evenings of colic). A lot of people in his playgroup said their kids didn't until 6 months.

Also, I can't say he regularly slept through the night until recently--there were a lot of nights when he would wake up hungry at 3 am. He's 6 months now, I would say this became a regular thing around 4.5 to 5 months.

Re: i feel like a failure!!

You are so not a failure!! My DS is doing the exact same thing. We had one week where he slept 4-5 hours a night and that more than a month ago. Now its every 3-3.5 hours he's up. I want to cry everytime I read a post about babies his age and younger sleeping through the night. I think I've read every sleep book there is and he is a texbook baby during the day. He eats well, naps well, cluster feeds. We swaddle at night and he is up like clockwork every few hours.

Lately I dread seeing a sleep post on this board because I feel like everyone has a baby that started sleeping through the night between 6wks and 2 months except me. I actually did cry after reading the March mommy update and saw how many people had babies about his age sleeping so well. But I honestly think that my child is just not ready to sleep that long and nothing I do is going to rush him.

The only thing that keeps me from being insane is that we do one bottle of formula at night. I don't know if it is something you would consider, but my DH does that, it only takes him 1/2 hour and it gives me a longer stretch of sleep. I know it means we are not EBF but I figure he gets 95% BM so a couple of ounces of formula a day are fine.

I have no advice but lots of hugs! Hang in there they have to sleep eventually.
