I failed again
I failed my 3 hour glucose. i received a message from the doc covering yesterday referring me to the Diabetic counseling nurse at Roosevelt Hospital. I left a message for her but no call back. First available appt. is next week. I"m SO upset with myself and depressed. I don't know how i'm going to juggle these dr. appts with work and its causing me MAJOR anxiety.
my )(*& DH is of NO comfort to me - his biggest concern right now is the boys night he's planned for this week

Re: I failed again
Don't be upset with yourself--You didn't do anything to cause this. It's just your body's reaction to insulin & sugar.
It's good that you were on top of things & found out early so you can monitor it.
Good luck

Re: I failed again
I just found out today that I failed as well. It's a shock to find out, especially if you've had a good pregnancy so far. As my husband pointed out, if this is the worst that we have to deal with in the pregnancy then we're ok. I know he's right (and oh so practical) but I still had some time this morning for a good cry.
It's nice to know that a bunch of us are in the same boat. Perhaps we should start a thread to discuss what we're eating and how we're feeling?
Please feel better and know that you're not alone. FM if you need to...

Good luck tomorrow and please keep me posted!!! at least we're not alone. i've had a good pregnancy so far too although my doctor did tell me i've gained too much weight and i was not overweight pre-pregnancy. I suspect the carbs/sugars have something to do with this.
A GD thread will be helpful. I have NO clue what to do until my appt. next week.

Yah, if you let it get out of control and STAY THAT WAY. Some people do not do testing, no nutritional counseling or may need pills or insulin and don't get it. Then there's a problem. Early detection and treatment are HUGE when it comes to any form of diabetes. Nowadays, even people who are borderline get help to prevent problems.

Re: I failed again
Don't beat yourself up. You did nothing to bring it on. I was on a GD diet before I got pregnant. Look for whole grain foods. For pasta, Barilla Plus is good!!!!!! DH didn't like it at first, and made a separate pasta for himself. Now he eats it because he knows it's better for him.
One of my favorite meals is chicken and whole grain rice. I cut the chicken into 1 inch cubes and saute it with brocoli in a little olive oil until cooked. As I'm doing that I make the rice. Then I combine them. Some lite soy sauce with it is yummy. I also chop up some cloves of garlic and mix it in. MMMMMMM!!!!

Re: I failed again
You didn't do anything wrong. It's just the way your body handles pregnancy.
Maybe this will help you feel better: My cuz had GD and controller it with diet and did not gain one pound from the time she found out til delivery. Her baby was nice and healthy. I don't know if that helps.
It will be ok. Don't blame yourself.
As for DH- you should venture over to the parenting board and more often than not, it's I hate my DH week!!!!!!

Re: I failed again
Don't beat yourself up, I think EVEN if you ate liimited sugars throughout your pregnancy ( as pther posters have said) it's just the way your body processes sugars during pregnancy.
I am sorry you are going through this

Re: I failed again
First of all hugs to you. Second - your feelings are all normal and know you did nothing to cause this. I had GD with my first pregnancy and I remember feeling the way you did. It took about a week but with time it got better. You just have no clue how your body will react to pregnancy and your body decided not to process sugars as it normally should. You can be a healthy eater and toally in shape and still get it. My nutritionalist even had told me my normal diet did not make up of someone who had GD and I had it. Try to be strong and you'll figure it all out. I know the hardest part for me was juggling work with the million dr appts and the timing of the diet and blood drawers...and that stressed me out big time btu I got thru it. The diet I was able to deal with as much as it stunk since I was starving all the time and wanted more meat!!! I hope you met with a counselor who helps you with a diet plan that works for you.
On a positive note, you have lots of sonos to see you little one. That at least is the fun part.
FM if you ever want to talk.

I'm so sorry you are going through this!
Please don't blame yourself. There is nothing you could have done nor could you have known your bodys reaction.
You are providing this baby with a wonderful environment to thrive and should be proud that you are getting the proper care.

Re: I failed again
You're going to be okay and so is your little one. It is nothing you did, it's your body reacting. You should look for lean fish (the safe ones), whole wheat pasta, veggies. Do you like hummus? It goes great with whole wheat crackers.
Please don't blame yourself

Eat like you are on South beach, but with some whole grains thrown in. Limit fruits. Eat a substansial breakfast-eggs, turkey or canadian bacon, 1 pc whole wheat toast. Also it doesn't matter what you ate before. The placenta in some women interferes with the body's ability to regulate insulin. Good luck. You and your baby will be fine.

Re: I failed again
I'm sorry to hear you failed the 3-hour. It's not your failure though, just the way your body is reacting to sugars right now.
I know people who had this who ate very well, really watched their diet, and it still happened. I don't think there's much you can do to prevent it, just make your appt. and follow your guidelines.
It is hard to juggle all these MD appts! I have to see another doctor besides my OB-GYN (I have another condition that can get aggravated with pregnancy, so it needs to be monitored). Some weeks I feel as if all I'm doing is going to doctors, but it's important for the baby and me, and my job understands which is good.

totally agree with this. south beach is the perfect diabetes diet. obviously you don't want to be cutting calories at this point, just changing how you eat. you had absolutely nothing to do with this, please don't feel guilty. you and your baby will be just fine.

Re: I failed again
I have GD also ... what they are going to be looking to do is control your intake of CARBS ... They do want you to have carbs, but they have to be good carbs. When we looked over my normal breakfast, although I was eating very healthy (whole grains, fruit, skim milk, etc...), the amount of carbs were doubled or tripled of what they reccommend... it really is easy to see where you can make the cuts. It may work, it may not. You may have to go on insulin to control the sugar. They will go over everything with you in detail and help you formulate a plan and most importantly you will be monitored closely so that this gets in control.
Here is examples of my plan sheet:
Breakfast: 1 Starch, 1 Milk, 1 Meat, 1 Fat. ex: 1 Slice Whole Wheat with 1 tsp butter, 2 Egg Whites scrambled in Pam, 8 oz Skim Milk
Snack: 1 Fruit, 1 Meat ex: Apple with 1 Tbs Peanut Butter
Lunch: 2 Starch, 1 Fruit, 3 Veggies, 2 Meat, 2 Fat ex: 3 Cups Salad with 2 oz Chicken Breast, Tomato, Broccoli, Pepper, Chick Peas. 1 slice Rye Bread, 2 tbs low-fat dressing
Snack: 1 Starch, 1/2 Milk, 1 Meat ex: 1 Slice Pumpernickle Bread, 4 oz Skim Milk, 1 oz Low Fat Cheese
Dinner: 2 startch, 1 fruit, 1 vegetable, 3 meat, 2 fat ex: 1 cup Lentil Soup, 17 small grapes, 1/2 cup carrots, 3 oz Chicken Breast, 2 tsp Olive Oil
Snack: 1 Milk, 1 Fruit, 1 Fat ex: 8oz Non Fat Yogurt, 1-1/4 Cup Strawberries, 6 almonds
