I deserve a medal
for not killing DH. I pumped 7 oz of BM this morning (which I was SO excited about) and left it in a bottle for DH to give to DS (who was still sleeping when I left for work ). Just to make sure, I texted DH that BM CANT sit out if DS didnt finish it all.
I come home from work and about 3 1/2 oz is still in the bottle SITTING ON THE COUNTER, where it had been for 6 HOURS! DH said "Oh I thought you texted it CAN sit out." Why the F would you leave ANY bottle sitting out for 6 hours??
Yeah I yelled at DH but he is still alive and breathing. Is it wrong to think that I deserve some kind of medal?

Re: I deserve a medal
If I remember correctly, freshly expressed milk can stay out for up to 8 hours at room temperature.
But he should have put it in the fridge if DS didn't finish the bottle. I would have flipped out!

Re: I deserve a medal
I've always heard its a rule of 3: No more than 3hours left out 3days in the fridge and 3weeks in the freezer.
That's why I was so upset Dh left it out so long.

Re: I deserve a medal
If the BM was in the bottle the baby drank from it should be thrown out after an hour.
And no it isn't wrong to feel that way. breastfeeding is difficult and pumping is worse. You worked hard for that GOLD and it's wasted! Also if I was reading your post correctly and the baby did drink from the same bottle, your DC could have gotten sick. Lesson learned... read texts carefully!
When I was still pumping we divided up the milk into portions to minimize waste. HTH.

If the BM was in the bottle the baby drank from it should be thrown out after an hour.
If the baby drank from that bottle, it needs to be thrown out because bacteria from the baby's mouth has now entered the bottle through the nipple. This is true for BF or FF . I have pushed it to an hour and a half....

This is what my lactation consultant told me and I have done for both my kids. 8 hour only if fresh

DS2 always finishes his bottles, but with DS1, there were times when I offered the unfinished bottle at the next feeding. I just refrigerated it in between. It all depends on your comfort level, but kellymom seems to say it's ok to reuse at the next feeding: kellymom
You can leave freshly expressed milk out for 8 hours. It can last a week in the refrigerator although I always try to use it or freeze it within 4, maybe 5 days. It lasts in the freezer for 6 months. I've gone a little longer than that at times and it was fine.
