I am such a dope!!!
I dropped my car off for an oil change, 2000 miles overdue.
The guy calls my office (he does all our cars) and tells my boss that I needed an inspection................... 6 months ago!!!!!!!!!! 
I really need to screw my head on a little tighter......life is just passing me by and I am not even paying attention 
ETA: My boss is the one who labeled me a dope....

Don't be upset. NYS sucks. They changes thestickers. You use to be able to see your inspection date from inside your car just backwards. Now they changes the sticker and if you don't think to look you forget. It's a tiny sticker now with hole punches telling you when your inspection is up. I just noticed a couple of weeks ago when I was brushing off the snow that I was 1 month over due. And by the way I still haven't had time to get it done. Hopefully this weekend.

Those punch tickets are a pain in the azz. The first year the mechanic didn't even punch it!
I'm surprised you went to long without a ticket. In NYC you get a ticket the day after it expires without fail.
You got lucky!
