I am not handling this well
Went maternity clothes shopping for first time today. If you were at destination maternity you heard me crying in the fitting room. I am overweight to begin with and with my regular clothes on I thought I looked good. But when I looked in the mirror I was horrified by what I saw. I am so self conscious I feel huge and I am barely showing. What's going to happen in months 6,7,8? I don't know what to do. My mom says I should see the beauty in being pregnant. I want to by my low self image is getting in the way. Please help me. If I can't get over this hump, the rest of the pregnancy is going to be torture.

Re: I am not handling this well
You are not alone by any means. I was very (still am) ashamed to go shopping because I was afraid that I would blow up to be huge and not fit into anything. I bought two pairs of black pants and wear them all the time because I can't wear jeans at work. I also got this cami that has lycra in it so that when I wear it under my shirts, it sorta smooths everything out as best as it can. I don't like to show off my bump because it doesn't look like one, it looks like I did before I had weight loss surgery so I am sooo embarassed. I know how you feel. A lot of us do.

Re: I am not handling this well
Omg, I could've written the same exact post after my first experience. I left there empty handed and cried the whole way home. Since then I've grown more and have embraced the bump. I took DH with me the second time around and also had a very sweet salesgirl. It was a much more positive experience. Hang in there

Re: I am not handling this well
So sorry that you are feeling bad about your body. I don't know if this will help, but I was overweight when I got pregnant too and felt the same way. Between the baby killing my sweet tooth (thank you baby!) and my desire to eat healthier, I think I'm actually in healtheir shape now (I'm due this week) then when I got pregnant. It has made the body issues easier.
Plus later in pregnancy I looked more pregnant and less blimpy and the baby likes to move around and say hey, which also helped with the body issues. Just keep thinking of your little one! Good luck!

Re: I am not handling this well
I was the same way and it doesn't help that my mom was constantly on me about my weight. I was about a size 16-18 when I got pregnant. Also one of my friends gave me her maternity clothes but she was a twig and all her maternity clothes are mediums and smalls. Definitely didn't help. But I found great pants at Kohls since I can't wear jeans to work. I also got a few tops from old navy that are great. I also happened to find a dress at believe it or not BJ's that wasnt maternity but it fits well and looks great. Also look into maternity leggings they are great. I have a B shaped belly with 2 bumps but when I wear tighter maternity pants with full coverage it shapes me better and I look pregnant not just fat! Hang in there! It will get better and don't let anyone get u down! Just think of the beautiful baby that will be here in no time!

Re: I am not handling this well
I'm with you. I'm in my 33rd week and cried tonight while packing for some business meetings this week. I have three big meetings that I would like to dress nicely for, but none of my maternity 'work' dresses fit me today...I remember feeling this way with my other pregnancies and I try to remind myself its temporary and the weight will come off but that doesn't make it much easier. I also try to focus on how fortunate I am to be pregnant. When I was pg with #1, a co-worker of mine reminded me how much he and his wife had wanted a child of their own but weren't able to so they adopted. I realized I was complaining about something his wife was dreaming about and would never have. in a few weeks/months it won't matter how fat I looked at these meetings - it'll matter that my baby and I are healthy.

Re: I am not handling this well
Thank you everyone who replied. My friends and family keep saying people will know you're pregnant and it doesn't matter what they think. But I don't care what they think I care about what I think when I look in the mirror. It's not the other people I'm concerned with it's me. I'm the one who thinks I look horrible. I'm the one depriving myself of a happy pregnancy. The pregnancy has been great so far. I should be so happy but I can't seem to turn the corner on my insecurities.

This! I was so upset in the beginning bc I thought I just looked like I gained weight. I was in the dressing room almost in tears too. Once my belly was showing, I actually enjoyed having it and shopping for clothes.

i totally agree with you. Even though people mean well and say you are pregnant, you're supposed to get big etc, it doesn't really HELP take the feeling away about our own bodies.
I'm somebody that struggled with my weight all my life, was pretty chubby as a kid and remember how self conscious I was.
As I grew up I did lose a lot of weight through exercise and diet and would be considered in shape to most people but it's something I constantly have to be on top of.
So it is very, very hard to feel my body out of control and just growing, growing, growing. I have cried a few times
I don't have any advice because it's something I'm just dealing with. What does make me feel better is when the baby kicks and moves It really just brings me back to what's important.
And treat yourself to a nice haircut or blowout, manicures, and GOOD FITTING CLOTHES. It does make a difference.
I recently went and bought tons of maternity clothes and I feel that they are so much more flattering and comfortable than what I was wearing before. If something didn't fit, I would go one size up and it'll make all the difference.
good luck!!!
