I am an accent snob I think....
I don't understand the Northern middle america accent. (You know like upp Il & Michigan area.....) It seems klike it takes so much effort to make the "oooo" sound.

I came up with my theory "Conservation of Consonants" that applies to accents around the country. For every person in "Bahston" who drops an R, there is a person in Texas adding it to a "warshing machine". People who drop Gs can find them in Brooklyn. Long Island is picking up somebody's Ws, but I haven't figured out where yet.

OMG! I totally agree with this! I went to Penn State and I used to make fun of my PA friends for that all of the time!  But, believe me, it's worse in London - my DH doesn't say WILL he says WIW!

UGH!! i want to know this too! DHs whole family is from Altoona, PA... and it drives me NUTS!! instead of "tile", it sounds like "towel'..., "while" sounds like " wow"... "home deeepo" is "home DEP-o"

DH is from Alabama, and although his accent is mostly gone, he still says things like "IN-surance" and "UM-brella".
His family pretty much sounds like Forrest Gump. And they manage to make my name into 2 syllables (i.e. "Ayyyunnnn" ).
And of course it's peh-CAHN pie

Holy Crap! Don't spend too much time in the UK than, everyone has a different accent even though they are from the same town! If you live on the right side of town you have one accent, on the left side of town a different accent...then you get the scousers, the brummies, the geordies, the mackams, the scots, the essex girls, OMG its a plethora of accents!!!

oh I know it...... my family is scattered....my Auntie is from Kent...very posh & proper; my cousins are from Luton, another set of cousins are from Shropshire (& I still laugh & say "Shropshire slasher" whenever I address something to them), and some from Cambridge. DH is like, but they're all English Please, his Queens accent is worse than my friends, and they grew up a town away from each other

I read an email about this almost 3 years ago. It still cracks me up!! There was even a comedian who did a stand up routine around this issue.

I never knew about the email or comedy routine. I was talking about this in high school (I had a classmate from Texas, which started the whole idea). That was 17+ years ago....

In Australia everyone leaves off the r's and they over emphasise their schwas.
part and pot sound very similar, b/c there is no r sound in part.
arse and a ss sound the same, too.
Luckily there arent too many accents like the UK. I think there are 3 different accents in all of Australia.

Hey, I dont say Warshing Machine! Although, I am sure there are several Texans here who do!
Also, The correct pronounciation for Pecan Pie is Puh-Cahn not Pee-Can.

by far my fave accent. my best friend is from australia and i could just listen to her talk all day long. i love when she gets mad cuz her accent is so much more heightened!
