I am absolutely traumatized....

I took DD for her blood test today... its her 1 year blood work.... omg... it was torture... they put the butterfly into her arm and moved it around and around... and could not get the vein.. then they tried the other arm and same thing!! I went with my dad because DH was busy... and he had to tell the guy it was enough...

I have never seen my daughter so upset... She was literally shaking.... and in the end... no blood was drawn....

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go now? I swear, I never thought I would be so traumatized.. but I am... and it was just a blood test!!!!!

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

You have to call Quest and ask them which of thier offices have extremely experienced blood drawers. We had such a fantastic one in the city! We were in and out in 2 minutes. And we did allergy testing as well, so extra viles!

Did they have you hold her whil she sat on your lap backwards? This, I think was the trick!

Lily has the same problem. We've been several times to have her blood drawn and they can never get any. We have to go to the hospital to get it done.
The first time, the girl realized she couldn't get a vein and she didn't even try....I loved her.

Can they take blood from her finger?
DD's PED always does it in the office and he always takes it from her finger, never her arm/ veins. DD is 2.5.

We had the same problem we tried two different times, two different locations with no luck. I finally told my pediatrician that if they wanted it done they had to do it because I was not going back to another lab. So after all that our pediatrician did it and got a vein on the first try.(thank god)
It was a nightmare though. Chat Icon

OMG your poor baby! I was so scared to have DS's blood drawn when he turned 2 but we went to Quest Diagnostics and the guy that drew the blood was AMAZING! My son didn't even make a PEEP!

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

I just took DD (9 months old) last week for bloodwork...I was freaking out!
We use lab corp. I emailed them ahead of time and made my appointment online.
They called me back and told me which tech. to ask for when I got there because she was great with kids!
The "trick" that worked was we finally had her in my lap, head against my chest.
At first we were trying it with her cradled. They got some, but, not enough.
As soon as we repostioned, she Thankfully got all she needed.

omg you poor thing. Chat Icon

AJ's 1yr blood was taken from her toe. She didn't even care. She kept trying to put her shoe on and then started to push the nurse's hand away to see what she was doing.

I thought she was trying to stop the nurse but as soon as she saw the vial and the nurse pressing her toe she watched capitivated. Then got bored and started to play with her sock (i had to remove of course).

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

ugh and the worst part is... we are currently taking away the pacifier.. it would probably totally soothe her right now (she is still upset and crying... but I think its because she is tired...) But i am too stubborn to give it back!! Is that bad?

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

I took DS to Quest in Smithtown and they were awesome with the blood work. For DS#1's blood work, it took a few minutes, but they were patient with him.

I had to take DS#2 to get blood work after he was only 2 weeks and went to the same place. While it was traumatizing for me, he did great!

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

As someone who has done his fair share of DRAWING blood on little kids (and now do a lot more painful things... fortunately with sedation) let me give you some tips.

1. Pain control: Consider using EMLA or some other topical anesthetic. This is a double edged sword since EMLA can actually cause the veins to constrict making them harder to hit, but they can make the pain. Also use a sugared pacifier.

2. Consider stepping out of the room. I'll be honest, blood draws are often worse on the parents than on the kids. While this may not be a popular suggestion around here, if you step out of the room you may do better since you'll walk in and it will be all done.

3. If you have a kid with tough viens consider getting the blood drawn at a outpatient lab in a children's hospital (which I guess around here is LIJ) or teaching hospital with peds (?WInthrop). The lab is often "backed up" by either peds nursing staff or peds residents who are skilled.

4. Now this won't help you but is just something to know. Often blood draws are about luck. With my profession I consider myself to be in the top 1-5% of people at drawing blood/doing IVs, etc on little babies. There are days where I can't hit anything. There are others when I can get blood from a stone.

Hope that helps.....

where do you live?

I've only ever taken DD to have blood draen at MErcy Hospital in RVC, in the ryan building.

She hates it, but they are quick and as gentle as possible.

This is very helpful... thank you so much!! Quick question, if I decide to go to the hospital, do I just walk in with the prescription?? I am so confused!!!!

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

I had a similar experience - it was awful! Fortunately we did eventually get the blood. I'm soo sorry.

I read somewhere that you can use a numbing agent prior to the procedure to help. I'd ask your ped about it.

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

not sure where you are located, but I took DS to LapCorp in Sayville (I think sayville) on Sunrise Highway south service road. The lady there was GREAT - DS didn't shed a tear adn we were in and out in minutes. I live close, so I was able to go when there was no wait.

HTH.

ETA: I just had bloodwork done at Good Sam and will go there now any time I need bloodwork again. Maybe they would be good with babies too?

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....

As far as going to the hospital you have to see if they have an outpatient lab. For example, if you use LabCorp you should look on their website and see if one of their outpatient sites is located at LIJ or Winthrop or wherever. Logistically, this may be a little more inconvenient since these labs tend to be busier than the free standing ones and you have the issues of parking, etc at a hospital.

My DD is 16 MOS and I still haven't gotten her the 1yr bloodwork out of fear. My lab is Quest and I hate when I even go to them. They are usually insensitive jerks there!

However, I discovered after the nurse practioner at my Pediatrician's office said that the lab at St. Charles Hospital is GREAT (and I live out east) that they take my insurance (I have GHI) and can get it done there.

When I get the guts I will go!

Sorry for what you went throughChat Icon
