Re: Hydrangea
I am not sure they are the same.
Hydrangea are VERY fragile. A corner or protection from the wind is key.

Re: Hydrangea
Not sure if all types can go outside, but my apartment and my neighbors house have HUGE hydrangea bushes. They don't cover them in the winter or anything. I know if you give it different fertilizers it changes the color of the flowers.
Just did a quick google search and came up with this.... http://www.essortment.com/home/keysplantinghy_simu.htm

Re: Hydrangea
My mom had huge bushes in our backyard, but they were there when we moved in, so I don't know how fragile they are in the beginning. One of the bushes was up against the house, and the other was in front of a row of hedges, so they might have had protection from the wind when they were originally planted. We never did anything to protect them as mature plants, just gave them some water in the summer.
I think different soil types can also cause the colors to change.

Re: Hydrangea
I have replanted Hydrangeas that were pot plants in the house outside in my garden and they are still alive! I always find them to be super hardy and real survivors! What other plant changes color in resposne to the soil they are in???

Re: Hydrangea
It's usually not recommended to plant them because they are not supposed to be as hardy as hydrangea plants grown for transplant, but I've known a few people who've had success with planting them.
You might as well try, what's the worst that can happen?
