Hydrangea bushes....do they come back?

The previous owners had like 3-4 in the backyard...do they come back? Do I have to do anything to get them to come back if they do??? Of course this is a few months off...wishful thinking it gets warm sooooon

As far as doing anything for them... that depends. Do you know what color they are?

Hydrangeas will bloom in different colors depending on the pH of the soil. They can be blue, pink, or anywhere in between. Of course, there are white hydrangeas and others that never change color, no matter what you do. But the typical mop tops are what I'm assuming you have?

I have three shrubs and made the mistake of pruning one of them back before I found out that they bloom on 2nd year wood. Meaning the flowers will only come from last season's new growth. And since I CUT OFF last season's growth, I'm not expecting flowers this year.

I kind of had to though, it's right in front of my stoop and it was getting out of hand.

You even have a blue lacecap hydrangea, my favorite!! When we went to Nantucket years ago, that was the first time I had ever seen deep blue hydrangea. They were everywhere! I've been hooked ever since.
