Hurricane Florence
As of right now, it looks like Hurricane Florence is going to slam into the SC/NC area, probably late on Thursday/early Friday. Does anyone have friends or family in that area? They're already declaring States of Emergency in some of the areas around there, in anticipation of the storm. I'm hoping the damage is minimal...

I'm in NC! :( I'm further inland so we're not being evacuated, but I'm sure nervous about the flooding, tornadoes, high winds, and possible power outages for multiple days!

Re: Hurricane Florence
Yes, I have a cousin that lives 20 minutes north of Myrtle Beach. She's actually right near the NC/SC border on the coast. I know I saw posts online that stores were out of water everywhere. Hoping they don't get slammed too hard.

My friends live on the beach in NC and my friend is due this week with her baby! praying for them! And my other friend has a 1 year old and breast cancer! I just feel for both of them! At least they live by each other and have each other but still they have no other support in the area!

Re: Hurricane Florence
https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/10/us/florence-hurricane-season-wxc/index.html
... Forecasters say Florence could mount a direct, devastating hit on North and South Carolina as the most powerful storm to hit the area in three decades. ... Swells up to 15 feet high could reach the coast, Myers said, and the storm system is likely to stall when it hits land, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some inland locations. ... A Category 3 or higher is considered a major hurricane and packs winds between 111 and 129 mph. Category 3 storms can inflict "devastating" damage, the hurricane center said. Florence could work its way up to Category 4, with sustained winds of at least 130 mph as it crosses over the warm Atlantic waters. ...
I hope everyone stays safe...

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) on Monday ordered a mandatory evacuation of the state’s coastline ahead of Hurricane Florence’s expected arrival on Thursday.
Approximately 1 million people in eight counties have until noon on Tuesday to evacuate, the governor said. Four major roads will reverse their traffic lanes to help facilitate the mass exodus. ...

I just moved to the Charlotte area. Looks like they are predicting 30-40mph winds by the time it reaches us. Praying all those on the coast will heed evacuation warnings. I hear they come inland to us to escape so we should be okay. Fingers crossed we don’t lose power and this thing doesn’t end up like Hugo.

We are watching closely as we have a condo in Myrtle Beach.
My friends in Greensboro are having problems finding water to buy and that’s pretty far inland.

I’m getting pretty nervous - seems like it’s just getting stronger. Luckily i was able to gas up the car this morning (most places I passed are all out) and got some water yesterday bc stores are empty. When Fran hit, power was out 1-2 weeks so I’m hoping they’re better prepared to fix it this time.

The National Weather Service is publishing updates every 3 hours now. Each time, it looks like it's trending farther south. Now, it looks like SC will get hit a lot more than predicted a day ago.

Unless she’s some sort of emergency responder or works in a hospital, I’d tell my job to shove it. I would assume a mandatory evacuation makes it illegal for them to remain open.

Re: Hurricane Florence
SC is probably going to get hit hard since it looks like it will skirt along the coast there. My cousin near Myrtle Beach ended up leaving to stay with her IL's in Florida. My parents also have a condo in MB so I am wondering what damage will be.. prayers that it weakens before it comes ashore.

I have friends in Charlotte NC, Myrtle Beach SC, and Sumter SC. From what I know so far, the only ones who havent evacuated are the ones in Sumter, and I think she should get out too just to be safe, but shes being stubborn.

Re: Hurricane Florence
It seems to be slowing down a bit. Both travelling speed, and wind speed. However, that just means that it will spend more time dumping rain over the area that it hits. The wind won't be the major damaging factor in this storm. It will be water. Both the storm surge, and the torrential rain.

Hurricane Florence
Sadly the first two fatalities have been reported in Wilmington, a mother and an infant, when a tree fell on their house. So sad.

Re: Hurricane Florence
2 more deaths (4 total) The wind speed is dropping, at least. It's below 70mph, so it's technically not a hurricane anymore.
Still unbelievable amounts of rain and storm surge, but at least the wind won't be knocking down as many structures as if it was a Cat 4.
So many people tried to wait it out in their homes, despite all of the warnings. Now, with 3' or more of water in their house, they're waiting for rescue... They've rescued a few hundred people from their homes since Florence first hit.
