Humane way to deter squirrels/chipmunks?

We have several rabbits, chipmunks & squirrels that live in our yard. I know they need to eat, but I'd prefer they not eat my pumpkins yet!

Is there a way to keep them from eating our pumpkins? I always throw them out back for them in november, but I'd like them to last until then!

Also, if anyone know a way to keep animals from eating bulbs I've planted, I'd like to stop that too!

Google has several ideas, but a lot of them seem cruel to the animals. (like cayenne pepper & ammonia)

Its not cruel- they don't like the smell so they don't eat it.

I have been using black pepper in one of my flower boxes that they like to dig in, I don't think they get close enough to get it in their eyes since they don't like the smell.

Rub your pumpkins with chili or garlic oil.
As for the bulbs in the garden, the best I found was to lay chicken wire an inch over the bulbs when I planted them. The plants would grow thru but the squirrels couldn't dig them up. A good sprinking of black pepper in the soil helped too.
I use black pepper in my flower pots to keep the squirrels from digging everything up.
I wouldn't use ammonia in the garden - not something that I would want to smell, plus it might attract other animals to urinate in the garden.

Ammonia is a common ingredient in many commercial and homemade grass and weed killing solutions. While ammonia is a natural substance, it is toxic to humans and animals and can also harm your soil. Despite its effectiveness in removing weeds and grass, always consider its harmful effects before deciding to use it in your yard.

I'd be hesitant to use a severe plant killer near your garden. Ammonia kills all plants that it get near, not just weeds.
