How paranoid are you?

I just want to know where I fall in the mix. Do you freak over every little thing, half, do you freak and then forget it, do you freak out and go crazy for a while?

Today I saw the the bug spray I was using had deet (long story but I thought it didn't). I sprayed it on my legs once but when I realized later on.....it ruined my whole night. Now I am totally panicking.

I don't typically freak out. I watch certain things but also don't go crazy. I tried a lot of the non deet bugsprays the beginning of the summer. nothing worked so i use the ddt stuff, i just try not to use a ton on my exposed skin, but try to saturate my clothes a little more. I still get bit though, although not as much.

When it come to things like cold cuts, i stay away, but I was DYING for a turkey sandwich last week, so I had one. I know that the deli I went to is extremely busy and has a high turnover so I know the cold cuts would be fresh.

I've had shrimp and tuna a few times while pregnant too. Do i eat it all the time, no. I've even had a carvel milkshake a couple of times too.

Personally the.stress from freaking out can get you even more crazy then the thing you are worrying about. I wouldn't let it ruin your night, and if you're that concerned just don't use it anymore.

I almost never freak out. I try to be careful about some things -- like I don't take medication that's potentially dangerous, I don't drink, I limit "no no" foods. But I totally sprayed some bug spray on myself when I was out -- 100% on purpose, knowing it had deet in it. Those damn mosquitos were worse than an hour of having some spray on my legs!!! I washed it off when I came back in.

The only things that have completely freaked me out was when I found out at the beginning of my pregnancy I had a virus called pityriasis rosea that my dermatologist said I could google for more information and came up with a zillion horror stories about how it leads to miscarriage before 17 weeks (I'm 33 weeks now -- guess my derm and my OB were right that those reports were wrong!) and when I found out DS was Frank Breech at 28 weeks I totally flipped out and started panicking and doing everything in my power to help flip the baby, from yoga exercises to ice on my belly to prepping to schedule an appointment with the chiro. He flipped just before 33 weeks. Don't know if it was all my hard work or just coincidence. My OB hadn't been even the slightest bit concerned, saying it was so early.

Maybe I just need to listen to my OB lol.

Definitely don't let worrying about stuff ruin your day. It's so pointless to worry. It's one thing to do your best and feel confident that you're trying hard to be a good pregnant mamma, but another to freak out when you mess up slightly. Unless the 6 ice teas you just downed were actually LI Iced Teas, I think you'll be just fine.

I don't freak out. I agree that the stress from worrying can make you sick. Something to keep in mind is that even though our parents didn't have all these warning when they were pregnant with us is that the level of exposure to all of these things we're not supposed to have. You used the bug spray one time. I am not a scientist, but I'm pretty sure it would have to be a multiple time thing for something to happen to make it dangerous to the health of your baby.

Re: How paranoid are you?

I'm pretty paranoid. I didn't want to be, but after a false miscarriage and the fact that it took us a year and a half to conceive, it's hard not to be. I freaked out about some antipasti the other day and after reading your post I realized I put bug spray on last night (may or may not have had DEET) and didn't wash it off -- now I'm worrying about that.

Try not to stress, but it will happen. Just don't turn to Google to answer your problems! It only makes things worse! I find the ladies on here to be helpful because almost always someone has a stat that will make you feel better.

I don't freak out at all. I regularly use DEET. My nephew recently got a staph infection from scratching a bug bite and IMO a little deet is a lot better then a staph infection. I tend to limit my caffeine intake to once or twice a week, I don't eat cold cuts (except I treated myself to a turkey and american sandwhich for my birthday...and it was worth it), I don't drink or smoke. Otherwise, I eat pretty much anything. I'm generally a picky eater, so there are some things I don't like to eat anyway.

My reasoning is that if something is going to happen it will happen no matter what. I have been pregnant before, and by no fault of my own, I needed an emergency appendectomy at 8 weeks. Same pregnancy, the baby developed a very rare complication and my pregnancy ended at 21 weeks. Eating a cold cut or using some DEET didn't cause any of the above problems, and wouldn't have prevented them either.

Re: How paranoid are you?

somewhere in the middle i guess... i mean, i'm cautious but not paranoid. i don't take meds, don't drink, smoke etc. i haven't eaten unpasteurized cheeses, and have maybe had 3 cups of soda this pregnancy - no caffeine otherwise. but i've had cold cuts here and there from busy, clean delis, and milkshakes/slurpees etc and not thought twice about that. IMO it's a bit ridiculous to "freak out" over things like that. my OB's don't make me feel like i should be crazy over anything, so i'm not. i use common sense and eat things in moderation. i too, have miscarried, and it took me a long time to get pregnant at the healthiest i've been in my life, so i'm fully aware that some cold cuts etc isn't going to make me or break me, so to speak, during this pregnancy.

Re: How paranoid are you?

Not paranoid at all. It took us a time to conceive. I'm confidant the LO will be ok. I'm just staying away from meds and no drinking. I limit myself to an iced tea besides that I'm not worrying about it. Dh asked if I plan to give up anything and I'm thinking maybe Caesar salad but even that I think is fine moderation. I've seen miscarriages with people who follow all the rules and healthy pregnancies with mother's who drink a bottle of wine.
