How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

First off, I was raised Jewish so I'm not too sure about any of this. DH is Catholic but knows NOTHING. We decided to raise our children Catholic and I'm trying to plan a Christening while not really knowing anything. The church I want to use (Holy Family in Queens) told me they can't give me a date until a month or two before we want the Christening which is driving me a little insane because I would REALLY like to start planning something.

So I was talking to my dad (my dad is Catholic and was raised in a strict Italian/Roman Catholic house) and told him we were thinking about doing the Christening in October because September was a little busy with the Jewish holidays and we thought August might be too soon (I'm due June 28th). He informed me that we should do it in August because it's supposed to be done sooner rather then later, G-d forbid something happens to LO.

So my question is, what is everyone else doing? With the unpredictability of labor I don't know when LO will be born (the latest would be July 8th - my Dr doesn't let patients go 10 days past your due date) so I don't know how old he will be in August, even though I have a feeling I'm going to go early.

We will have a christening, most likely in the spring or early summer when the baby is maybe 6 months old or so. I don't want to rush the christening since the baby is due in October and then it's the holidays and winter.

I would tell your dad that you are going to wait and see about the Christening until the baby is born and you have a better sense of the timing. Tough titties for him!

My dad wasn't being pushy. He was just making a statement because I was asking about it. I should have said that.

And thank you for your response.

This is what I have heard as well and would have loved to do it sooner rather then later, but with our DD she was 5 months old. That was mainly because of DH's job, he can not take off at all from Memorial Day until Halloween, so we had to wait until November, but we are pregnant with #2 and the LO is due Oct 2 and we will have the Christening in Nov or early Dec so #2 will be about 1-2 months old.

You can do whatever you little hear desires! I know people that wait till 10 months to almost a year before they had their LO christened. For me and DH we decided to do it in the Spring month. Our twin LO's will be 7-8 months. We also want to use the church where we got married. I think that would be so special!

My DS was 6+ months. You can do it when they are 12 is you want. There is no age. There were kids that were 18months or older at ours.

My DS was 5mo. We plan on Baptizing the twins in Octoberish... They will be 3-4mo, depending on when they're born. Back in the day it was done right away, but nowadays babies are baptized at any age.

DD was three months old, and DC#2 will be around the same.

Honestly, I baptised DD myself in the hospital with holy water. Anyone can baptise a baby, you don't even need a priest! Its supposed to be saved for emergencies, but I did it and I feel like it "counts." I told the priest when we were planning the real baptism and he just laughed and said, I will pretend I didnt hear that LOL

Re: How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

About three months old.

I'm going with what my family did - my mother had my sister, my brother, and myself all Christened around 3 months. I was born April 7th and my Christening was in the summer - I believe July.

Yes they say the earlier the better when it comes to the "point" of getting christened. So they would go to heaven god forbid.

I'm thinking we would wait at least 3 months. I'm due in November so I would want to wait until holidays are over.

Re: How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

I have no clue lol.
I wouldn't do it earlier then 3 months. But that lands me right in the middle of the holiday season. Then I'm stuck right in the middle of winter. Ideally, i'd like to wait till the spring but then the baby will be 8 months. For me I think that's a little late.

I'll probably suck it up and do it in January/Feb when the baby will be 4/5 months.

i'm in the same boat as you! I'm due in August and wanted to do the christening in October sometime. I wouldn't want to wait to Jan/Feb it will be too cold for the baby. I might just do it in October but I am still contemplating with the idea.

Re: How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

i was in the same boat as you - i was raised jewish and knew nothing while DH was catholic. We had his party when he was three months. He was born in June, we had it in September. #2 is due to be born in November, but i might want to wait until its nicer out in the spring, we'll see. It doesnt really matter when you do it - i would just do it before 10 months or so

Re: How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

Not sure yet what to do, we might do it once she turns a month b/c then we are going to running into the holidays or we might wait until after the new year when she is 4-5 months.
We had a huge party for DS, but i think this time we are going to have something small, so we can do it really anytime.

Re: How old will LO be at his/her Christening?

I'm due in November, we're planning on having the Christening in March so the LOs will be 4 months old.

Strict Catholics do Christenings sooner, I know one couple who had their priest come to the hospital to baptize their children! DH and I are not very religious, we picked March because it's away from holidays and we won't have to worry about snow.

DD was 5.5 months.

Do it when it's best timing for you. August can be pretty hot!
