How old is
your computer?
Ours is about 7 yrs old.
It's starting to make some sounds I don't think it should be making. so I think it's time for a new one. But shopping for a computer scares me

About a year.
Seven years is too long. Hard drives start to fail...I would definitely get a new one.

My laptop is prob about 2 and a half years old. I would get an external usb hard drive and back everything up. You don't want to be messing around if you have important things on your computer. You got your moneys worth with 7 years on that computer.

Ours is 6+....its holding up well overall, but we keep saying that the next time we turn it on could be its last.... It was the first thing I bought for myself when I got a real job after college.

7 years?!! It belongs in a museum. I'm sure the new one you get will be less than you paid for that one too.
ETA: I just got a new laptop.
Our last one was 5 years old and I paid about $500 less than I did for my last one.

Our iMac is 7 years old...still works really well (except iPhoto - 5k + photos bogs it down - and that is after we removed about 4k).
We're waiting for the new OS to come out (today, I believe) before we get a new one. *finally*

My desk top computer was built from scratch I think in December.
My laptop I just got in March.
My work laptop is brand new - just got it the week of Labor Day

Work PC ~ 3 years
Work laptop ~ 3 years
We have new PCs on order to replace those two, so I should have them fairly soon.
Main home PC < 1 year
DS's PC ~6 years. His computer is older than him...
We'll probably get DS a new computer when DD is a little older and can start using it. She'll get his PC, and he'll get one to do more advanced computer work.
