How much to give for a wedding present?

2 of my husband;'good friends are getting married within the next 2 weeks, how much do we give?

I would give around $300.00-$400.00

I base it on a few things, First the amount they gave us is a huge factor. The place and the time, I feel an afternoon wedding may be a little different then an evening wedding.
As a rule of thumb I ususlly go with 250-350 depending on the relationship.

for a good friend, we give between $250 and $300. I also take into consideration how much we received and what type of affair it is. But, the biggest factor is how close we are to the couple

I definitely DO NOT take into consideration how much they gave me...that's weird! I give what I can afford and how close I am to them. If they are close friends we usuall give between $250-500.

Well, we were married MANY years ago, so I definitely cannot base it on what they gave us, and I don't think i would do that, nor do I even remember how much they gave us, they are both evening weddings, one on a friday and one on a Sat, I guess I'll go with $300 since my husband has not seen either one in a few years and they use to be close, but not any longer, Thanks for all your input, we don't want to be cheap, but we know we can also over do it and would kick our selves in the a$$' in the long run!

Our "standard" gift is $200 - for friends who we are not super close with. Best friends we give $300. That's what we can afford.

Sort of a different question if you were married last year and a friend who attended is getting married soon and gave you a low amount of money (or at least imo) would you give the same amount or higher?

When I got married DH and I wrote the amount on the back of each card that each person gave us. We match it and add a little!
We just got invited to a wedding of our best friends brother. We were discussing the "gift" tonight. He didnt come to our wedding (wasnt on the "list") but weve grown closer through the years.
Anyway, we will be giving $250 due to the fact that its a Sat. night wedding and we want to cover our plates which is what we try to do @ every wedding we go to!

depends on the closesness and amount you can afford.
at our wedding the average "couple" gift was about $200, less then the plates but we never thought of it that way. We normally give $250-$350 for close friends, $400 for family and $200 for regular friends...but we have given more and given less. We try to save for a wedding gift, we like to give a decent amount if we can.

Maybe some think we are cheap, but our standard is 200, obviously more for closest friends. But I base it on the type of wedding and what we can afford.

Well we used to be closer....have seen each other a handful of times in the past year. I am going to her Bachelorette party.

So I guess the consensus is you wouldn't match the gift you would just give what you wanted...is that right?

For our wedding $200 was pretty standard even from close friends and bridal party.

I would say $200-300.

i went to a wedding recently for a co-worker and we gave $200. i am in my sisters wedding and we are giving $500, i'd give more but just don't have it. i say anywhere from $200 to $300 for a friend

My goal is to always stay in that range...but sometimes the money isnt there and you can only do what you can afford!

We give $250 normally to friends and $500 to really close friends and family.
