How much for lawyer??

Can anyone tell me how much you paid for a real estate lawyer?
We are VERY close to closing and our attorney who has been the biggest PITA EVERRRR is really screwing us over. We have free legal counsel through DHs union and she's just terrible.
WE just want to know how much we would pay if we ended up getting someone else for the closing. Also can you recommend someone?

I'm paying 1250 but he's covering every single thing from the time we put in the verbal offer to the very end.

My firm doesn't do them any more but we used to charge between $1,000 and $1,500. This was several years ago though.

I paid $2500 plus disbursements. Sounds high compared to other numbers here but its a co-op in Manhattan which requires diligence, etc that is not needed for a house. So that probably has something to do with why it was a little more.

You paid a premium for Manhattan, not for due diligence which any attorney worth his/her fee should perform. Prices in Manhattan for a closing are more because it is Manhattan.

Thanks. I am a lawyer, so I am comfortable in understanding why the fee was what it was, and what it was going towards. The diligence that is required for a Manhattan co-op as compared to a house in Long Island is in fact quite different.

Re: How much for lawyer??

We just paid $1800 for both of our closings (1 to sell our house and 1 to buy our new house). So you figure $900 for each.

My friend did closings as an attorney in Manhattan for a long time and even for the attorney there were co-op board issues and there was more paperwork, which meant that he charged more. I remember the number of hours he sometimes had to put in for a $2,000 or $2,500 fee. It was tremendous. Even on Long Island, I do not think that the going rate reflects the time involved. I do think that it pays to have a lawyer that you trust. The the OP, your union may have more than one choice but I am not sure if it is too late now. It depends on how the legal service plan works. It does pay to have a lawyer that you trust but make sure you know the limits of what they are obligated to do.
