How much does it cost to move??

DH and I are moving from an apt in Manhattan to a house Springfield, NJ probably Labor Day weekend.

We live in a 2 bedroom apt in the city, and it's not a big place, so we don't have that much stuff...2 beds, a couch, flat screen tv, an armoire....

I told DH that moving is so costly and that we may have to pay something like $5,000. He finds this hard to believe...so I'm wondering what did you all pay for similar-type moves?

really $5K? that seems like alot and now you are scaring me b/c I need to hire movers

I don't think it would be that much- I was thinking $1500 - $2K????

I think we paid approx. $3K for an out of state move (LI to Chicago) and we had lots of stuff. We were coming from a 1 bedroom apt, but we also had some furniture we were having moved from BIL's house.

Someone just told me that they paid between $1K & $2K to move their house full of stuff.

FH and I bought a house in NC...when he moved down all his stuff from his apartment it cost about $1200...that's including the price of the uhaul and gas and tolls...

ru getting a moving company or uhaul..

5k def sounds little excessive!

we payed 1000 to move stuff from a 1-bedroom apt in West Islip to Florida.

For a 2BR-- I would say you will not spend more than $2K and that's a generous estimate.

i paid $3,200 to move a 1 bedroom apt. from NY to Florida. We used mayflower. just be sure that they are insured

We used CyberMove.com, and didnt have any problems. I think it was about 600.00; but we moved some items ourself and we did not move that far away. Basically to cut down on cost we moved all the boxes ourselves and let them move the heavy/hard stuff. We could do it a little bit at a time so everytime we went to the house we brought a box or two to carry.

If you call around they'll ask you a bunch of questions and give you an estimate. They'll ask how many rooms it is, size of TV's, etc.

No matter what you do, make sure that they are insured, make sure that they are very legit (as in have been in business for X amount of years), and try to always go with a referral!

5K does sound very high. Are you in a walk up or does the building have an elevator? That can be a major issue with the cost.

While we didn't move from Manhattan we had a similar amount of stuff, possible more and a similar distance. We moved from a second floor apartment (stairs) into a house. Total cost from packing supplies and boxes to the movers tip was no more than $1500.

There may be additional charges for a holiday weekend too. We moved on a Thursday and I think we got a better rate because it wasn't a weekend.

I paid $1600 (before tip) for a move from hoboken to long island - 1 bedroom - 3rd floor walk up. I dont think you will pay more than $2k.

I agree - shouldn't be more than $2000 unless you have a ton of steps or alot of sharp corners. Or if you have alot of furniture that needs disassembling and then re-assembling.

We paid $1600 and we also had a piano which made it more expensive. We moved from a 2 bedroom apt 1st floor in Mineola to our house in Bethpage.

There were no real stairs or parking issues so it was cut and dried.

I wouldn't recommend the movers we used though. They were LAAAAAZZZZYYY! 4 movers took 8 hours and we helped!

I think it depends if you pack and provide boxes. That's a huge chunk. If you do all the work and hire movers for just the day, to load and unload, it could be more like 1K. IF they pack for you and provide the materials, then you might be at 2K or more.

$5K sounds like a lot. We've moved twice and I think it was around $1500 both times. Is that just for the move or does that include packing too? If they are going to pack all your stuff for you it might be more accurate.

My sister just moved from a 2,300 sq. ft. house in Babylon to a 2,800 sq. ft. house in Wading River and the cost was $1,800.

under $3k and we did it ourselves. From LI to GA moving a one bedroom apartment.
