How many Sonograms do we get during Pregnancy?

How many sonograms do we get during our pregnancies? I know we have the 12 week and the 20 week but do we have any other after that?

This pregnancy I'll have my third tonight.

With DS I had quite a few, one at 6, 8, 12, 16, 20 weeks...then 2 more at the end for growth sonos.

So far I have had 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 20 weeks.

They said they wouldn't do anymore after the 20 weeks unless they feel it's necessary.

it depends..
for me i am high risk so i get a sono every week for the whole pregnancy.

It depends on the doctor and what your insurance allows.

My doc does one to confirm the pg around 8 weeks

One at 12 weeks if you are doing the ultrascreen

An anatomy scan at 20 weeks

Then a growth sono around 32-34 weeks.

I had an extra one last week because at my 20 week one they could not get good pictures of the baby's heart.

thank you guys my husband may not be able to make the 20 week appt so i wanted to know if there may be one after so he can feel better about missing the 20 week

Depends on your OB and what your insurance allows.

I get one at 7/8 weeks to confirm pregnancy, one at 12 weeks for the ultrascreen, a level II at 20 weeks, and a growth sono at 36 weeks.

With my last pregnancy I had one at 5.5 weeks (to rule out ectopic because of pain I was having) and a second growth sono late, at 38.5 weeks, to check size. Both were considered medically necessary, so my insurance covered them, but they weren't part of the standard sonos that most women get.

I go every 2 weeks (so they can measure my cervix) bc I am high-risk.

Yes, it depends on your insurance. But in most cases if it's deemed medically necessary, the insurance will usually allow more.

So far, I have had a sonogram at:

7 weeks (confirm pregnancy)

11w+ (ultrascreen)

12 w (at doctor's office)

16 w (at doctor's office, SUPER quick)

20 w (level II)


Not sure if I will get a growth sono later on.

With my last PG, I got 5. 6wk, 8wk, ultrascreen, Level II, and one at 32 weeks to check my placenta (that was the extra one).

With this PG, I'll get 2. I'm going with a midwife this time.

If you are, I would try and reschedule so he can be there. That's a crazy special moment!



nope we are not finding out the sex but I love seeing the baby its the most amazing thing to me

Like previous posters said it depends. With DD i had ones at weeks 5, 10, 12, 20,28, 37, 38 and 39. I had GD so they monitored me more closely toward the end.

With this pregnancy I've only have a sono at 6 weeks and 12 weeks so far.

deanna, who do you see as your HR? I am being monitored by Dr. Sicaranza (i saw her at 8 and 20 weeks) but they are not doing ultrasounds like I was told they should be. Since I'm on lovenox, I was told they should be monitoring every appointment for clots and they arent im worried they arent paying close enough attention to

i get a quickie sono every week at my drs office to check the hb's and cervix. and every 3 weeks we get a growth sono at the hospital. I am also highrisk and have been in preterm labor since 23 weeks now.

It really depends on your insurance. So far I've had the following:


7w5d - to confirm the pregnancy

11w - ultrascreen

12w1d - ultrascreen gain because they couldn't get the measurements the firsts time.

20w3d - Level II

I don't htink I'll be getting another one unless necessary at this point.

yea i have the blood clotting issue too.. and thats why i get lots of sono's.
i see Dr. Kofinas in Garden City.. he is just amazing and so thorough.
they also check my cervix everytime too.. which is another biggie

I had a lot with DS 5,8,12,16,18,20, and 3-4 more additionally to check cervix and fluid levels

this one, I've had at 5 weeks, 12 weeks, 14 weeks, hope to have one tomorrow at 16 weeks, andmy 20 week is scheduled already

My doctor does 3 normally. That's all I had last time. This time I had a second ultrascreen because they couldn't get the measurements they needed, so I'll probably have 4 in total.

So far I have had two official & one unofficial. First internal was at 9weeks to determine EDD, and then the second was the NST sono at 13 weeks I think, that was also an internal. I had an unofficial external at the OB last time when they couldn't find the heartbeat w/ the doppler. DC was standing on their head. My next is my level two the end of January.
