How many sonograms...

does a pregnant woman typically get?

When I went to my first appointment (at 9 weeks) on Monday and asked, the doc said another one at 20 weeks and unless anything was up that would probably be it. Is this normal? I guess I was under the impression it would be a couple more times than that. While I'm glad that she doesn't want to do anything that's unnecessary, how do they know if anything is up? Chat Icon

Re: How many sonograms...

i know i was disappointed too. i thought there were a few more. I know some doctors do another one around 32-35 weeks also...ask if they can do another one...i did, but by the time they did it i was already 37 weeks and couldn't make anything out, but it did ease my mind a lil....try to get one around 32 weeks (3D)! I wish I had done that one!! Chat Icon

Re: How many sonograms...

I think they depend on what the doctor feels is medically necessary, and also what your insurance will allow.

My doctor normally does 3-and my insurance will only cover 3 unless the Dr. has a medical reason to do more:
1st one to date, 2nd one at 12 weeks, and 3rd at 20 weeks.

However, this pregnancy, because of my history, I've had

1st at 6 weeks
2nd at 8 weeks
3rd at 12 weeks
4th at 15 weeks (yesterday)
I am scheduled for another at 19 weeks.

Re: How many sonograms...

I had my initial one at 8 weeks, then the 12 week ultrascreen. Then I had a quicky one at my 13 week appt since she couldn't pick up the heartbeat with the doppler. I'll have my next one at 20 weeks. Not sure about any after that. I guess every office is different.

Re: How many sonograms...

Yeah, that makes sense with what is medically necessary. I guess I have just seen a bunch of girls on here get one at 12 weeks and I worry that there is such a big stretch between 9 weeks when I went in and 20 weeks. Chat Icon

Re: How many sonograms...

I had on at 7.5 weeks. My next is at 20 weeks I think. I think it's pretty normal unless you have problems. I may be having another internal sonogram at 16 weeks to check cervical length.

Although at 12 weeks, the Dr. used a sonogram type thing to hear the heartbeat. I was satisfied with that.

Re: How many sonograms...

Are you getting an Ultrascreen (checks for certain genetic abnormalities)? If so then you get a sono at 12 weeks as well.

Re: How many sonograms...

I know how you feel. I was upset too that I didnt have more. I had one at 6 weeks to date and one at 18 weeks. I was hoping to get a few more just to see the progress.

Like Neener said if the doctor feels more are needed then the doctor would do more.

Re: How many sonograms...

I am on the same schedule. 1 sono at 8 weeks, another at 20+ weeks and a possibility of one more at 36 weeks to check babies growth. It doesn't seem like a lot in comparison to a lot of other people but as long as the baby is healthy, I don't mind. Chat Icon

I remember being disappointed and asking my dr "so what do we just assume everything is okay at this point" around 11 weeks. She looked at me and said very matter of factly - "Yes, why would we not"

Dont worry, I had one at 9 weeks, 22 weeks, 36 weeks - that woudl have been my last if DS wasnt so darn big so I had 2 more at 39 and 40 weeks to determine size.

You will hear the heartbeat every week after about 14 weeks, and by 20ish you will feel the baby all the time so that to me was so much more comforting than a sonogram. And I didnt like the idea of exposing DS to too much testing in general, sonogram or not.

Good luck and enjoy!

Re: How many sonograms...

I believe its only like 2, unless you see a specialist. Then you would get one at every visit. I'm not really sure how they can tell if anything is up though, unless you mention something that is a red flag to them I guess, or your past health issues/family health issues etc..

Re: How many sonograms...

I was only supposed to have

8 weeks to date
12 weeks to measure neuchal fold
20 weeks for level II and sex determination

But I had another:

22 weeks, because they weren't able to get everything at 20 weeks

and

26 weeks to determine baby's position.

I won't have anymore unless they suspect a problem.

Re: How many sonograms...

Well, I had a lot:
6 weeks because I was seeing a specialist
9 weeks
12 weeks
17 weeks - because I was having early & painful BH contracttions
18 weeks - follow up from 17 weeks
20 weeks - level 2
28 weeks - 3D

I am not having any more unless I am late or there is a problem.

Re: How many sonograms...

Oh I have had a TON already, but that's becuase I did IVF and we originally had twins so...

4-8 weeks I had 6 total

12 weeks I had the ultrascreen

18 weeks I'll have the anatomy scan

32-40 weeks I'll have one every other week since it's an IVF baby (it's policy at my OB but I'm not complainingChat Icon )

7 weeks
12 weeks for the ultrascreen
My next one is my level two (20 weeks)

I'm fine with this schedule. MY doctor uses the doppler
at each visit so as long as I hear the heartbeat I'm
happy.

Re: How many sonograms...

I had one at 6 weeks, 12 weeks(ultra screen), 20 weeks(level II) then I got a 3D at 32 weeks(that was something I paid for...not dr prescribed)...I also got one at 34 weeks at Drs office. I was surprised I got another one...but I guess they wanted to check the growth and they said one more at 39 weeks!

totally depends on the doctor... I had total of 3 during my pregnancy: at 9 weeks, ultrascreen at 12 weeks and then another sono at 20 weeks...

Re: How many sonograms...

With no past history and a healthy pregnancy then two is pretty typical. Your OB can always choose to let you have more though.

I had a m/c with my first pregnancy so I had a few more this time.

7 weeks - to measure and date the pregnancy

9 weeks - following up on the measurements

11 weeks - I was cramping and spotting so they wanted to check

21 weeks - Level II

22 weeks - Chat Icon moved too much at the Level II and they couldn't get a clear picture of her heart so I had to go back.

No more unless an issue arises, I'm at 34 weeks.

So far I've had one at 8 weeks and one at 12 weeks. I'm scheduled for another one at 19 weeks.

I haven't asked how many I'll have after that.

I'm right there with you, I have a high risk pg, and have had many sonograms. The I had one sono a week untill I was 8 weeks pg, and then again at 12, 15, 23, 28, 33, then once a week again from 36 weeks on and 2 this week... YIKES! Thank God, All have check out well. But generally, In a normal situations, 3 - 4 sonos is usual

Re: How many sonograms...

I started off at an RE so I had sonos at 5w5d, 6w5d, and 7w5d. Then my OB sent me in too early for my Ultra Screen so I ended up having 2 other sonos........one at 11w and one at 12w5d. My next one (the anatomy sono) is at 20w and then I scheduled a 3D/4D sono for 23w and probably again around 34w. Not sure if my OB gives me another sono after the 20w one.......I think there is a growth sono towards the end but I'm not positive. Guess I'll find out. Chat Icon

Re: How many sonograms...

Aside from the typical ones that we are all scheduled for, I could feasibly get one whenever I wanted. My docs' office says if you feel you need to come in, then come in. All it would cost me is a copayment of $20 for peace of mind. So far I did that once. I do not plan on doing it again unless I feel something isnt right.
