How many lady geeks do we have here?
Who's in a computer or technical job?
I work in a computer center as a network administrator. I'm one of only 3 women geeks out of 30+ geeks in this office.
Do you find you are underestimated because you're a female in a male-dominated field?
I used to feel that way when I first got here. I still feel like that sometime when people find out what I do and are surprised. Why be surprised? I work hard and have a better work ethic than most of the men I work with.
And the other stigma is that because I have a technical job, I must be a masculine person or a ball-buster. Some people will always be ignorant but it is getting better over time, I think.

Yes i am a network administrator, and I am underestimated and second guessed all of the time because I am a female. (Used to be worse at my old place of employment - note OLD!)
I also had a feeling I was at a disadvantage when I was interviewing.
As for the ball buster; I am probably concieved as a ball buster because I am one.

I'm more of a nerd. Like I think the Oxford English Dictionary would make a great wedding gift...
but FH's friend's from college with their 733t and r0x0r and all their geek culture are like from another planet to me
I'm like "whatever...I would have made fun of you in grade school!"

I'm in IT! I do application support!
There are quite a few women in my organization in IT (not as many as I'd like) and a few of them are the "gurus" of their respective groups!

I am not, but my sister is in the science field (super smart astro-physicist) and she runs into the sexist problem all the time. She almost quit grad-school it was so bad.
The only advantage is that it has made her a beautiful, strong person.

My FH is a programmer and from what he says when eh talks about work, when there ARE women, they seem to be marginalized. Men are more readily accepted.

I can't wear skirts to work.
The a/c in the server room comes up through the floor vents. I work a skirt once and walked over one of them. HELLO! That's a wake-up call. Like something out of a Marilyn Monroe video clip.

Fomer geek here. Application Support & Development, some systems administration.
I definitely wasn't taken seriously on the job. When I would take classes for certifications, I was a novelty in the course and had the male geeks tripping over themselves to help me just in case I couldnt' figure it out.

Re: How many lady geeks do we have here?
I am in the computer field...application support mostly (I now have my own consulting business). I did find though, while there were women in the field, there are mostly men...but I've never felt that I was under-mined because of being a female. Maybe because I can yell the loudest
