how long do you keep your bills?
don't know if this is home related...i guess sorta, but just wondering....do you save your bills and bank statements?
if so, for how many years...when do you decide to shred?
i have SO many years worth of statements. I figure i can pretty much shred most of my bills since the records are all computerized now. Not sure about bank statements. How many years do you keep?

I keep household bills (electric, cable etc) for a year, same with credit card bills. Then i shred them all.
I used to keep bank statements for a few years ( i seem to remember hearing that you were supposed to keep a few years worth), but i've recently decided that everything is computerized so i'm keeping a years worth and then shredding.
Tax returns you keep for 7 years i believe.

I don't have any of them. I'm pretty much paperless with all my bills. I can get 2 years worth of statment online from my bank and other bills as well.
I have all tax returns though.

I don't save any bills. I do banking on-line, so there is always a electronic tracking if I ever needed it.
I hate clutter, esp piles of paper..drives me nuts!

I shred them immediately after paying them. I have heard you're supposed to keep them for a certain amount of time though, so you may not want to do what I do.

Same here. And I opt for the online statements if they offer it. I had paper. Plus there is no need to keep a statement when everything is on the internet these days IMO.

I have been saving them for years. This weekend we started to go through them and shred. We started with the bills from 1999, but some 2009 things were in there as well. Honestly, I just don't have the space to keep these things anymore. It felt really really good to go through and shred this stuff.

If my DH is paying the bills - Five years
Since I pay the bills, garbage the minute its paid. Nearly everything is electronic nowadays so I am not worried.

I ditch them after I pay them.
The paper was causing so much clutter and I found that I never referred back to them. I JUST switched to paperless.
