How is pcos diagnosed?
I am hoping this is the right board to ask this on...I was told today that my dr thinks I have pcos...Is there a test for it, or some way it can be diagnosed? I was tossed a lot of info about how it can lead to diabetes, and how I should see an endocrinologist, but it really didnt compute at the time.
Thank you!

Re: How is pcos diagnosed?
Well there are several factors that determine a PCOS diagnosis. One of the biggies is a higher LH than FSH ratio. Also, many people have a "string of pearls" in their ovaries - which are many immature follicles. Other indications are irregular periods, and facial hair.
I'm not sure how your doctor could make any kind of diagnosis while you are pregnant (which from your avatar I am assuming you are?)

Yeah, im 31 weeks pregnant, I am high risk, so am in the office once a week. My office has 6 deliverying drs, and they want me to see each dr before I go into labor so I will at least recognize them. Today I saw a dr I had never met before, they decided to do a fetal fibronectin, and while she is between my legs swabbing she comes out of nowhere and says, " you are going to have diabetes, you have pcos" and hands me this pcos pamphlet. Did my crotch tell her?
she said I have darkened skin on my inner thighs and underarms, facial hair, and have to lose weight, I have gained 9 lbs so far in my pregnancy, and passed my gestational diabetes test so I am very confused

OMG that is crazy! That doctor was totally out of line! Yes facial hair and skin tags and being overwieght can be symptoms of PCOS but is in NO WAY a diagnosis. For her to tell you you have it and that you are going to get diabetes is totally insane.
After you have the baby and your body gets back to normal, you should go to your regular ob/gyn and talk about it. What should be done to make a diagnosis is a sonogram of your ovaries and CD3 bloodwork to test your hormones.
I can't BELIEVE that doctor did that, I would be so pizzed if I was you!

Re: How is pcos diagnosed?
I would definitely call to complain. To diagnose PCOS simply by "looking" is ludicrous. And to tell you that you WILL have diabetes because of it is borderline abusive.
Even if you DO have PCOS--if it's treated in time, you can save yourself from becoming diabetic.
But either way, I really hope you complain about this doctor. COMPLETELY out of line!!!

Re: How is pcos diagnosed?
First off I am sorry you had to hear this at this point in your pregnancy. PCOS is really only an issue for those TTC and experiencing IF. Since it obviously didn't impact your ability to get pg, I wouldn't worry about it at this point. To be honest, I would ignore what your doctor said and enjoy the remainder of your pregnancy and the little one on the way. In the future if you have trouble getting pg, you might want to look more into it. GL!

Totally, uncalled for!
If it were up to me, I would probably look for another doctor. Totally rude.

Sounds like what my doctor told me. Essentially PCOS does cause ovarian cysts. However, many doctors just treat the cysts, where in actuality, what happens is that the pancreas produces extra insulin because the insulin receptors in the cells after absorbing food, to not absorb what they need to. therefore, the pancreas shoots out more insulin, which elevates the reproductive hormones (estrogen, progresteon, testerone, etc.) the elevated levels of these cause the cysts.
My doc. thought i had this too...we did a blood and thank god, no insulin issues. she always did a sonogram (external and internal) to get a better look. i have a HUGE cyst on my right ovary that must be removed , but it is not PCOS.
you should get bloodwork done (test thyroid, reproductive hormone, etc.) as well as a sonogram.
GOOD LUCK!

This is not always true. Not everyone with PCOS is insulin resistant, I am not. And PCOS is really a misnomer, there are not cysts in the ovaries, what you see in a sonogram are immature follicles. Because of screwed up hormones, these follies don't mature, and therefore no eggs can be released. I have never had any ovarian cysts, but I always have immature follies.
