How inconsistent are they supposed to be in things they learn?

I think I am worrying over nothing. There are some things that DS may have learned to do or say months ago but he is either too stubborn or he forgets. I have to think of some examples. Ok, even something like "clap your hands." He may do it on command consistently for a week, then not at all for over a week. Or he may do it once but not again for that day. There is a huge difference when he is tired. Even then, he may look totally aware but he isn't very responsive to anything except what he wants to do. I'm not expecting him to be a puppet, really. I'm not like that! I know that there are so many skills they have to learn, so it's not easy for them to always do things on command, plus toddlers are just learning to be their own people and have their own ideas! I just want to learn what the parameters of normal are, KWIM? Do I need to figure out what things he has forgotten vs. what he is subborn about or will it all come together eventually? Right now I am not sure what he really knows and what he doesn't (especially with speech/words I say and words he can say)!!!!!!!!!!

As Kaydyn learns new things...she forgets things she learned. She used to give kisses around 6-7 months....stopped giving them for a couple of months and now has started giving them again at a year. Same thing happens with words....she'll say things consistently for a long time and then not say them again...or it may be months before she says them again.

Not sure if it is normal, but my son does the SAME thing. For example, I taught him that a doggie says "woof woof" and he did it consistently and then the past few days he won't do it. I don't know if it is him being stubborn or what, but he has done it with other things too. He used to always wave bye bye but then as he got more verbal he stopped, but he doesn't say bye, it is strange. I remember awhile back I asked the dr about this and I think she said that as long as they were learning new things and not just stopping then it was ok. HOpe this helped ease your mind.

You have eased my mind very much. I could have used the same exact examples! My DS is continuing to learn, for sure. I was worried about some of the things that he was late to learn in the first place AND the ones that he knew for a long time then stopped. The dog sound is one he knew for a long time but now he either refuses to do it or he does it several minutes after I ask (so I wonder if he tries really hard to remember and then he does). I guess that being inconsistent is still okay if he was initially late to learn something or on the other hand, if it is something that he knew for a long time????

I used to think I knew a lot about child development because I took a lot of teaching classes before deciding to go to law school. Now I feel like I need to learn so much more just to be a good mommy!!!!!!
