Can you learn things on your own?

As in, reading a book, searching the web, etc.
I just have no patience for it. I really need to be in a class setting to be able to focus. I can't sit and read about something and try to learn it, especially when it's something that I really have no interest in (right now I'm trying to learn about web parts for work Chat Icon )

Yes. I retain the information better if I read along with whatever I am doing.

Yup, I learn pretty much everything from internet research. I even learned how to tie DH's tie Chat Icon

Yeah, see, I'm the same way. If I like the subject then I'll have more patience. But I still do way better in a classroom.

Re: Can you learn things on your own?

I can, which is why I think I loved my online courses, because it's more independent (not that grad. statistics was THAT successful on my own, but I did finish it! Chat Icon ). Part of my problem is I can't stay awake in classes, so on my own figuring something out I usually stay awake. For a little while.

It depends on what it is.....I tried to teach myself knitting and that was a disaster. But I have taught myself different cooking techniques for example - and it went well.

Depends on what it is.

Most "hands on" stuff, like knitting, no. I have to have someone show me.

Depends.

I can learn almost any software program with a book & the program, but I still prefer a course IF the teacher is good.

Re: Can you learn things on your own?

i taught myself how to knit using the internet.

when planning my wedding, i learned a lot of things that i can now use for other applications.

i guess, it depends if it's something i WANT to learn.

Re: Can you learn things on your own?

That's pretty much the only way I learn. I don't do well when I'm talked at. I have a BS, so I can technically learn things in a class, but if you throw me at a problem, I'll figure it out. I have taught myself numerous things, and do on an almost daily basis. It sticks in my head better when I learn hands-on.

I learn better on my own. I don't learn as well in a "teaching" environment. I am a self-learner.

Re: Can you learn things on your own?

yes, I am pretty good at teaching myself how to do things... I taught myself how to type, never took a keyboarding class. I also taught myself HTML (but since forgot it).

Re: Can you learn things on your own?

depends - I do well with hands-on type stuff on my own. I like to experiment and then I can see why or how it works.

But for things like theory, I prefer to be in a class and hear many different opinions

Definitely...

Writing code in particular - I learned that much better on my own than in any of my programming classes.

Re: Can you learn things on your own?

when the laws that affect my work changed, i absolutely had to use every possible method to learn the changes. i took classes, read the code, read some books, read online and read the posts to a listserve that i belong to. there were some aspects that clicked better one way than another. i had to memorize a lot of it because i get questions on the spot all the time, so I just needed a lot of exposure to it.
