How hard do you think it will be...
To add glass cabinet doors, with a wood frame to the top two shelves in this enclosure?

I have no idea, but I've used Mahopac Glass for a few things and they do a great job!!! If you want their info I can give it to you (they are on the border of Westchester and Putnam county.)

we are not handy--- maybe we could be, but we have no tools, etc. We have been living in Manhattan or just outside for 13 years-- so we haven't had the opportunity to be handy!
I have a carpenter who is a friend of the family that I could use, but i am not sure of how much he'd charge...
I was thinking of putting the dishes and glasses there-- obviously something stacked neatly if the doors were see through.
I figured I would try putting everything in there with the open shelves-- how do we feel about doing that? I have seen it a lot in pics, but never in real life.

you want to put the entire opening or ONLY the shelve part behind glass? whats below the shelves? is that a counter top?

You might want to see if you like it just open. You will have to have some work done to close that shelf area in. I would ask the friend of the family to take a look at it and give you a quote after you move it. I think open shelving is very nice as well though.
Some pics to inspire you.
Of course something like this is beautiful also, but you will need to box in that area.

Randi, is that tile behind the shelves or wallpaper? I can't tell from the pic. And is that part of the kitchen area or the DR?
And love your sunroom. That is going to be gorgeous.

yes-- there is tile behind, same as the backsplash. It's in the kitchen.
I am also replacing the molding around the opening, so the whole thing will look better. I think we'll try it open for now. No rush to add a door anyway. I would just put doors for the top two shelves, like a regualr cabinet and countertop, etc.

it may look funny because the shelves look like they are recessed into that opening about 4 or so inches... so you would have to extend the shelve out another 2-3 inches to make the doors flush with the wall/molding...

Are you painting it all white? The shelves & molding. That will look really nice. What colors are the tiles? What color cabinets are in the kitchen?

the trim will be white (BM white dove), and I am painting the kitchen BM mocha cream (a light gray-ish taupe). The tiles are mosaic, gray, taupe, reddish brownish/rust-- a mix, and here is a pic of the other half of the kitch. I can paint the shelves white and that may give it a more "cabinet-y" feel-- or rather a dedicated space, as opposed to just an opening with shelves, kwim?
eta-, we are also putting in wood floors
