how does this work? Fence related.
We want to install a PVC fence. Right now there's a chainlink fence there that I think has been there since the year of the flood. However, this year of the flood fence is all around my neighbors backyard. I would just build my fence in front of the existing fence but DH is concerned about whose side of the property line the fence is on. If it's on ours he'd like to rip it down and put the new fence up but that would screw up the look of our neighbors yard. What is usually done in these situations?

I think the best thing to do is to get a survey done & then present it to the neighbors.

I would get some estimates and then just go over to your neighbor to tell them that you would like to put up a fence. Ask them if they know who owns the chain link. Even if they're not sure, if they're on board for a new fence (because they'll benefit from it too) ask them if they want the chain link removed. I would have the estimates to show too. Also, by being upfront with them and showing them the estimates, they may offer to help pay for some of it which can be helpful. If they're not on board with the chain link being removed, I would just leave it....they're going to be the ones who have to look at it as you'll have the PVC up anyway.

I agree with a pp. Get the property "staked out" that way there is no questions. They are not that expensive and worth every penny if it helps keeps things good btwn neighbors. I interviewed a TON of companies. If you want names and phone #s send me FM. GOOD LUCK!

I had the same situation. I informed all my neighbors that I was installing a new PVC fence. None offered to chip in, but were more than happy to have a nice PVC fence replace the old chain link. More privacy for all of us.
I personally wouldn't put one in front of another, you lose property. Also, I wouldnt think the neighbors like the look of both fences in their backyard.

You get a survey done of your property, our fence company got ours from the Village when we had our fence installed. You should actually have one from when you purchased the house too. If it's on your property and it's your neighbor's fence, you have the right to let them know it needs to be moved.
